Brockley Welsh church for sale

Another local oddity looks like it will bite the dust. The Presbyterian Church of Wales on Lewisham Way is up for sale for £1.5 million.

The advert notes that:

A pre-application submission has been lodged for a change of use to Residential based upon a scheme comprising five no. 4-storey, 4-bedroom houses arranged in a terrace. Each house is allocated 2 parking spaces and has a rear garden of approximately 8m in length. The total estimated Gross Internal Area of the scheme is 9,600 sq feet.

With thanks to Pam.

I'm not overly sentimental about the past or have any kneejerk response to contemporary but it would be a shame if it went.

My great grandfather used to preach there. Very sad to see it go.

The rectory is actually half of an earlier large villa - one of the first on Lewisham Way. There was a presentation by a Lewisham historian at Broc Soc a few years ago that showed that Lewisham Way used to compromise of Georgian and early Victorian large houses in large gardens - I seem to remember this was one of the first along with Stone House

Mmm. A Pre-application? That sounds like marketing spin to up the value of the sale. I'm pretty sure that Lewisham planning wouldn't allow these buildings to be demolished. Time for a listed building application I think - and if they are not already locally listed, then they should be.

Yes. The old house attached to the church was built in 1823 by Jonathan Lucas of the Lucas family - who owned a lot of the St Johns/Brookmill Road area. It's one of the oldest buildings on Lewisham Way.

"Each house is allocated 2 parking spaces". Just what we need. In one of the best connected areas by public transport in zone 2 (numerous bus routes, overground, dlr, 4 mainline train stations nearby, cycle superhighway coming soon).

Apart from that, I echo what Monkeyboy says. It would be great if it were renovated into new homes and not demolished.

God, they can't win! Two parking spaces per house is quite a few cars off of the neighbouring streets (Lewisham Way is a red route). Allocated parking is welcome in my book, and will no doubt help them shift the houses.

Although I too would rather see sympathetic conversion. They look like interesting buildings.
