Ban on homophobic Deptford Green teacher upheld

A Seventh-Day Adventist who refused to apologise for telling a classroom of his students that homosexuality is disgusting has been banned from teaching. What would Jesus do? According to this guy, he'd embark on a sub-Littlejohn rant about political correctness.

The BBC reports:

A classroom ban on a Christian school teacher who condemned the "homosexual lifestyle" in front of pupils has been upheld in the High Court.

A judge rejected an appeal by Deptford Green School science teacher Robert Haye against his indefinite ban.

Mr Haye told a Year 11 class of students aged 15-16 the way homosexual people lived was "disgusting" and a sin, according to the Bible...

Mr Justice King rejected his appeal at London's High Court, saying the ban was justified because Mr Haye had shown lack of insight when he made his "inappropriate" comments and was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct. Mr Haye can apply to return to the classroom after two years.

But he said he thought his teaching career in the UK was over because he was not prepared to give up his religious beliefs - and the right to express them - in order to teach again.

Now unemployed and facing a £4,200 legal costs bill, he said: "I will not recant my beliefs. God comes first.

"Christians are now being persecuted in this country for believing in the Bible. That cannot be. We have a right to believe and express what we believe, but people are now afraid of being punished for not being politically correct."

With thanks to Fintan for the story.

Christians are being persecuted...! Does he not see the irony?

To say the lifestyle is disgusting or whatever is not persecuting homosexuals. That is free speech. To deny him his livelihood and fining him is persecution. Wake up and see the difference

Wow! Where is the freedom of religion and speech in the UK? The SDA teacher has every right to express his religious views in a Christian classroom. The judge needs to apologize for being intolerant of Christian views. Moreover, the SDA teacher will hopefully get financial compensation for being maligned needlessly.

He was sacked for using his teaching post as a platform to express his bigotry to impresionable children. He's free to believe what he likes, no persecution so everyone's a winner.

Dennis. Thanks for popping by.

The thing is, classrooms in London are far from Christian. They include some children from Christian backgrounds, as well as many Muslim children and other religions. And the majority with no religion at all. In addition, our classrooms may well include children with gay parents, gay relatives, gay friends, and many adolescents might be coming to terms with the feelings they have about their own sexuality. For some adolescent children, the classroom is perhaps the only safe haven in their life - the only place where there is a positive role model to help guide them.

In London, we are trying to build a city of people from very diverse backgrounds - we are not interested in similarities but in differences, and how we can use that to create a successful and dynamic place to live for everyone. And there is a place for Seventh Day Adventists in this dynamic - but they will need to become more tolerant of other people's views and lifestyles if they are going to succeed here. The influence of people such as yourself does not help them.

No, he was fired for abusing a position of trust with young people to promote his ridiculous religious propaganda (and then refusing to apologise). You have freedom of speech, but try calling your boss a cnut and refusing to apologise for it and see how long you keep your job.

It's a bit of a pity that homophobia is tolerated in chuches. It'll be a great day that when a preacher from the pulpit will say homophobic-friendly nonsense like "love the man but hate the sin" and someone will stand up and tell him to fuck off back to the middle ages.

Schools, Churches, Care homes, Hospitals.... the point is that these institutions can easily be hijacked by individuals who use them to promote their own personal agenda and ignore their responsibilities and duties of care. That sort of corruption can corrode a whole organization and cause it to lose its way. This sort of thing has be nipped in the bud. That is what seems to have happened here.

The broader political issues regarding these institutions are interesting, but that is really a different subject and cases like this don't really inform the debate very much. I would guess that it all looks very puzzling from a US perspective, which has a totally different political and cultural context.

It's not a 'lifesyle'. So his comment was both offensive and factually wrong in the first place.

Exactly, Christianity is a "lifestyle", inasmuch as you're free choose it over Islam, Hinduism etc just as you choose what to wear in the morning. Homosexuality is something that you just are whether you like it or not...

How come u use the term homophobia that means u are scared of guys which is ridiculous

Is it? I know some homosexuals who live chaste lifestyles. So there is a choice involved.

Similarly, I know heterosexuals who can't have the woman they want, and learn to accept it.

We should not be slaves to our physical desires.

Headhunter said...

Yes but whether they are chaste of not, they are still homosexual.... They just don't choose to act on it. Homo or heterosexuality is not something you choose. Do you remember waking up one day in your teens and thinking, "I think I'll like girls"? Gay guys don't "convert" from heterosexuality! However Christianity is something you choose to believe and something you take part in, it's very much a lifestyle choice. If you don't take part then you're not a Christian any more than you're a Muslim, a Hindu, a Sikh or whatever

Nothing to do with being a slave, and everything to do with expressing normal human behaviour.

Most heterosexuals that I know who "can't have the woman they want" (or man), DO learn to accept it. And then they are open to meeting someone new!
