Forest Bill

Greater Brockley's artist-in-residence Mike Hall has created another of his illustrated maps - this time, Forest Hill and Honor Oak, which he's selling on Etsy.

Looks nice! Interesting how paper maps become instantly obsolete. The Honor Oak pub is no more.

Is it?!

It appeared to be gutting internally when I went passed yesterday, but I assumed it was having an interior renovation - seems not then.

No - they posted on Facebook at the end of April:

Dear Friends

It is with a heavy heart that I must let you know that The Honor Oak is no more. The doors are closed the tears are flowing. When faced with such a difficult operating environment, couple with a distinct lack of support from Punch Taverns, we have had to throw the towel in, not least for our own sanity. Thank you to everybody who has supported us, played music, sung, danced, quizzed us or helped us plug holes in this disastrous building. We will miss you all and hope very much that the corporate management group moving in will be sensitive to the needs of the community.

Most of all a big thank you to all the staff who have kept the doors open during all the tough times....X

Any chance of reverting to old comments system? Disqus doesn't work well

Tend to agree - can only comment when at work now.

Don't much like disqus; but perhaps it is an easier system for BC whose time and patience can't be infinite, as they sometimes appear.

No, we won't be going back to the old system. It was too much abused by spammers and morons, unfortunately. This is much easier to moderate.

That's a shame as Disqus seems to have led to a big decline in commenting. Also slows the site down hugely and keeps trying to switch IE to compatability mode.

Brockley Nick said...

It has led to a decline in quantity of comments, but mostly because it is no longer the case that the first comment on every thread is "mung" and every comment after that is "stop saying mung" etc. That dynamic accounted for at least 50% of the comments and has now died. Although occasionally the arguments were funny, they were also extremely wearing and useful comments got lost.

Interestingly, visitor numbers to the site are much higher since January, which is also the time at which Disqus was introduced.
