New Cross Barclays to close

Reader James writes:

We've just had a letter from Barclays saying the New Cross Gate branch is closing on September 27 this year. Letter has no explanation as to why, just states that the nearest branch from now on will be Deptford.

Here's hoping that: 1) They keep the cash machine as it's the only free one in the area (next closest is a hike up to Sainsbury's) 2) It doesn't turn into a bookies...

Local bank branches help attract footfall to an area, as well as serving a useful function, so this is a bit of a blow for New Cross. Hopefully, something interesting will replace it.

That's a shame - let's indeed hope it is replaced by something which isn't dismal. There is another free cash-point at the post office next door, but the queues will be much longer if it goes from 3 machines down to 1 on that stretch.

Let's also hope they don't leave a covenant on the property that prevents it being used as another bank in the future, as they have done with other closures

The main risk is that it will become a betting office, I fear. See what happened when Newham tried to take action in a test case yesterday. I also hear that Lewisham is in sympathy with this action .

A real shame - I think that branch has been there over a hundred years. There are notes on each of the cash tills saying they are to close, so it will be a case of three down to one - the one being in a less well lit, off street part of the area. As Danja says, the queues are already quite considerable at times. There was me thinking this was a Zone 2 area of our capital city.

There is the cash machine in the Post Office next to it, isn't there?

Shame. You need quick cash with all those toms around

Well New Cross "town centre" just became even more of a dump.

A hostel, African wig shop or bookies would do really there, not sure what else.

I saw that news. It's ridiculous, on that High Street in Newham there are something like 8 betting shops! These shops are always in areas with vulnerable people who end up wasting all their money in them.

The article was very revealing about betting shops and how aggressively they consume money, it said that the betting game machines in these places are literally geared up so that the maximum amount of money can be spent, they don't have any flashing lights, no loud noises when you win, they don't even pump the cash out into a little trough when you win because all these things are perceived to take time away from the punter actually pumping money into the machine.

When I lived in Japan there was a problem with the proliferation of pachinko parlours. Godawful loud, brash, noisy places with no natural light where men (mostly) pump little ball bearing things into a pinball like machine in huge lines like battery chickens feeding.... No one speaks, no one exchanges glances, they just sit feeding balls into an electric machine...

None of which are within fifteen minutes walk, or even close. So, er, cheers.

Can be perhaps be redeemed if enough people write in to say that it is needed and should stay.

Barclays said in the letter I received that we could all use the Post Office instead. However the govt is planning on selling off the Post Office in the Autumn so we may end up with absolutely nothing around here! Also every time I go into the NX branch now I get a 'follow up' call from Barclays asking em for feedback. The calls take longer than my visit to the bank so I've started complaining and not answering the questions. It's all too much! This has happened now 5 times. I think they're trying to put me off using the branch!!!
