Brockley hygiene map

The Guardian Data Blog has produced an interactive map of the country, showing those restaurants, cafes, shops and other businesses that have failed hygiene inspections. This is Brockley, with the temporarily-closed Smiles Thai cafe among those that didn't make the grade:

With thanks to Mike.

What it also shows is that Degustation got a 1 (worrying but difficult to comply in the tiny space they have). Also Browns got a disappointing rating of 2 - bit harder to justify charging £3 for a coffee with that.

Prendergast school with red dot. Not good

And so did Arloe and Mo!

And for all the Top Chef Cafe advocates, you might want to see that this only got 1 as well......

It really is shocking how many BC favourites didn't even manage more than a one.

What do you mean? Brockley's Rock, Gantry have 5 stars, Broca has 3 stars... OK Brown's is letting the side down a bit with 2, the Orchard isn't even on there nor is Brockley Mess... On the other hand the fried chicken place on Endwell only manages 1 star - gross food with bad hygeine....

Nionios said...

The Orchard is there with a high rating.

Meze Mangal in Lewisham Way does not appear to have more than 2 stars

Good to see the more honest establishments proving their worth.

Anything less than a 4 is pretty bad in my book. I hope they shake a leg especially at some of the prices they charge. Over the years I've seemed to have already distanced myself from all the ones under 5, which seems odd coincidence? or Maybe my standards have improved and theirs didn't.

These along with Fishy Business don't fit into Nicky's socially engineered vision of Brockley.

I think these results prove there is rather a lot of style over substance in Brockley.

Wrong, troll on mung.

tezza, i think it shows that places that serve food are variable when it comes to compliance with regs. some are posh, some are not. you're obsessed with seeing conspiracies. stick to the moon landing or 9/11

Even faced with the evidence you choose to remain with your head buried in the sand!

A very loyal monkey to his fuhrer indeed.

evidence there are different ratings at different stores with no clear correlation between price and rating? tezza, you hate the area, your neighbours and cant wait to move. youve said so, you're a troll. we know it, you revel in it. your posts are predictable, C-. at least TRY and construct an argument

A word of warning about application of the H&S regs. As well as basic cleanliness businesses also get marked down for more minor things. This includes failing to keep separate foods in separate containers and pulls down most deli's where cheeses' etc are on show in the front fridge. This could be why Degustation got marked down (and places like the East Dulwich Deli, got a 1).

I'm not downplaying the importance of H&S checks - just people accepting the scores at face value and (worse) trying to compare them across different business types. Frankly, This is exactly the sort of thing that the Guardian map does unfortunately.

Absolutely agree with this - the Environmental Health Inspector spends more time looking at paperwork than anything else and it could simply be a lack of form filling in (cleaning schedules, staff training records etc.) that got SOME places the surprisingly low score. Of course sometimes not having a cleaning schedule means nobody cleans anything but most of the time, it just means the staff use common sense and training (not necessarily recorded on the staff training record) to clean things when they are dirty... You could most certainly get a 5 and still have a relatively dirty premises, as long your paperwork is filled out and there isn't a cat asleep on your chopping board or something obvious like that. I know some of the above might be an accurate and fair grading of the business but if you're really worried about your favourite getting a low score - ask them about it. Seriously, I'm sure if they've nothing to hide they'll be pleased to explain why they got marked down.

Be good to hear some feedback from some of the 1* rated places on the list.

For example, I'd be interested to hear from any of the poorly rated businesses on the Jam Circus stretch of Brockley Road. I regularly saw mice (N.B. plural) in there, including in the daytime. Are the others on that row suffering from mouse infestation or do they each have specific problems.

With Jam Circus closed for the foreseeable future it's probably a safe haven for rodents even if the other businesses are trying to exterminate them.

Interesting how many local staff canteens got the lowest ratings (I looked at the wide area) - as did the Tesco Metro at the end of Algernon Road! Ha!

Load of H and S nonsense. Eaten many a time at Brown's, never felt that there was a hygiene issue there. Staff are great, food and coffee is lovely, surfaces and surrounds are clean. Chill out all you uptight yuppies and bacterial-cleansing wiping yummie mummies and live in the real world.
