Meze Mangal closes for renovation

The most-protracted restaurant extension in history looks finally to be underway. Turkish restaurant Meze Mangal (Lewisham Way) has closed for renovation and will reopen in September.

The adjacent space has been cleared and prepared for Meze Mangal to expand for some time, but this closure signals the start of the work-proper. Not only will this mean more of one of the area's best and busiest restaurants, it will also help to tidy up the parade, on what could be a fine stretch of high street.

Brockley Jon reports:

"They are knocking the two units into one, and have built a brand new 5* kitchen in the basement, which means they can expand their menu, and there will also be a roof terrace out the back! It really is a huge job, I'm amazed they got this far without closing. Can't wait to see it finished."

With thanks to Richard on the Brockley forum.

Fantastic news! I'm looking forward to relaxing on the roof terrace and enjoying a glass of their lovely (for the price) Turkish red.

'Best and busiest restaurants', how would you know? I thought you were boycotting it until they moved a van that was annoying you or something.

No. I just chose not to include it in the recommended places thread while they had a massive great sea container outside their front window and ruining the streetscape. Anyway, what do you think of this news?

Isn't it in New Cross?

Brockley's own Harvey Milk...

Good news but I hope they don't make it all flash and jack their prices up.... The decor doesn't interest me, I like the food

Where is the real Headhunter and what have you done with him?

I look forward to Meze Mangal being allowed to leave Nick's "naughty step" and being acknowledged for the mighty fine restaurant it is.

It looked like it would still have that cosy feel. I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil all the surprises!!

Its Greater New Cross, Brockley doesn't have any restaurants.

I used to be a regular but then realised that Meze Mangal only have a 2-star food hygiene rating (the inspection took place in February 2012 though). I hope the new kitchen will deserve and receive a top rating.

Top Chef is still waiting so I wouldn't hold your breath

I suspect the owners of Meze Mangal may might have seen the money to be made in Dalston and are hoping that the same sort of thing can be done here. There is certainly very little local competition.

This is the real me... When have I ever given you the impression that I'm some kind of design guru?!

I eat at Meze Mangal a fair amount, often picking up take away when I'm too lazy to cook. I went there two weeks ago and the owner showed me around the new space next door and also down into the new kitchens. They are closing for these two weeks so they can knock the dividing wall down. I think he said they will have space for 120 and the old booth area is going to be a disabled loo facility. The pizza and bread oven will be on the back wall to the left on new side and the grill will also move over to the new side. He was quite chuffed to show me the new walk in fridges and the marble and granite inch thick work tops in the new kitchen. I told him it looked great but how was I going to be able to pay to eat there, surely the prices would go up? He assured me not, we shall see.

I'm a big fan of Meze Mangal, so I hope it works out well for them.

The food is definitely good at Meze Mangal but I certainly think that part of the key to their success is the sheer lack of other options locally...

I look forward to trying it out, I've only been there once and really liked the food, though it did seem a bit pricey. If i want nice Turkish food at a better price I go to ReynA on New Cross Road; the food and wine are good and reasonably priced. I feel like Meze Mangal is more of a 'treat' and I look forward to treating myself to trip there, hopefully on a sunny evening on the their new roof terrace.

Hi, does anyone know when they will reopen? Thanks

Less and less Turkish customers..

London is a diverse place, would you prefer that restaurants only serve a single ethnic group? Or do you think that you should stick to "your own"? Either is view is daft and narrow minded.

The terrace is a bit of a worry. As the flat roof at the back of Meze overlooks the back of my flat and my bedroom, please do try to keep the noise down as you're guzzling the last of that Turkish red.

from http://www.mezemangal.co.uk/

"Dear customers we would firstly like to apologise for the delayed opening of Meze Mangal. There is still on-going construction work taking place. As you may be aware of the changes that are happening, we are currently extending the restaurant & increasing capacity and we hope to resume our services back to normal mid October 2013. We will update customers with the day of opening on this website. Updated on 03/10/2013"

Hi Toby

Is the restaurant likely reopen by Sunday 24 November as I would like to book a birthday meal?

Many thanks

Matt

No idea Matt, I just saw that on their website. When i walked past at the weekend, it didn't look nearly ready to me though.

Thanks for the update Toby. I'll give it another week or so and then sort something else out.

Can't be helped since all businesses needs a new eye catcher to make it up to competition. Just like for custom homes that needs improvements to make it more attractive from buyers or customers.
