The online home for all things Brockley (SE4), Deptford, Ladywell, Lewisham and New Cross
Tonight, the Gulen's team tell us their bar reopens as a fully-licensed Turkish barbecue restaurant, open from midday to midnight. Menu below with plenty of cooking from the charcoal grill.
I wish them well, they are a nice bunch of blokes, but I had a look at the menu and the restaurant last night: Meze Mangal it ain't .They tried opening it before as a sitdown licensed outlet, which was basically just the food from next door rushed around the back. They are going to have to do better than that at the prices they had up. They are struggling to get a feel for the clientèle they need for that kind of venue.
I think this has the potential to be good - I'll be giving it a try. Good to have another slightly more casual dining option. It looks very similar to Reyna in New Cross and Turkuaz in Catford - if it is like them it will do very well.
Ali is the best.
£10.50 for a Shish.... really?
I just tried the new restaurant and the food (with new Charcoal Grill) and the service were excellent. They seem open to ideas and suggestions on how to improve the place and they even entertained us with an unexpected magic show.
Good to hear. It was one of the criticism I used to hear of the old venture.
I stand corrected!
Were you expecting McDonald's prices?Cheapskate.
*proclaims fatwa on the head of ianerc for his lousy review of restaurant he has not even tried*
Thank you Michael We hope to improve our magic next time
Not a review - just a an observation and a worry given it's previous incarnation. Still - mea culpa
As I didn't want to prejudice trade I've deleted my stray comment.
Sounds positive, will try it tonight. May I suggest that the team refits also the old Kebab shop?
We had a great meal last night. The food was tasty, fresh and the portIons were generous. The service was excellent and we got a complementary starter! We have another local, good family restaurant, let's support it and hold our judgements until we've tried it. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommended it.
very good addition to the Brockley scene, good food and nice people.
Any pide on the menu? I think a pizza style option would do very well and is desperately needed in Brockers.
Our party of six went to Gulens last Saturday and had a great meal, tasty food, generous portions. Ali even entertained the two kids (2&3) when they had finished their meal. Brilliant. Great value too. We will be back and a great addition to the street.
I went Gulen's last saturday and had a great meal. Also the services and atmosfere was lovely, but the best was the dessert (cunefe). I liked it a lot and i think everyone should try it : )
Just went to Gulen's - great service and good food. Encourage everyone to give it a go, as it would be a shame to loose this place from the Brockley High street.
As a full apology (which in fairness was based on the initial menu), I checked the menu last week and it looked pretty interesting.
As much as I'd love to keep Gulens Restaurant as my own personal secret and have a table available for me and my friends whenever we want, I feel Gulens deserve to have their praises sung out loud. We had a fantastic meal there last Friday night and, as mentioned below, the service was exceptional and the atmosphere very welcoming. We wanted to try the starters but chose to go straight for mains and then have room for dessert. Personally, I chose the Sebez Izgara which is a vegetarian dish consisting of grilled vegetables, tomatoes and herbs with rice and salad. It was very delicious with melt-in-your mouth qualities. Other dishes ordered were the chicken shish with rice and salad and the salmon stew which I am told tasted fantastic (it disappeared so quickly, I didn't get to try). We plan to return soon and try the very tasty-looking meze staters the grilled sea bass and lamb dishes and make room for dessert which we couldn't fit in on our first visit.A big thank you to Ali and his wonderful staff, especially our beautiful waitress, for a very pleasant evening.
Just had a lovely meal at Gulens with my family. The restaurant kindly gave us 2 free starters in addition to the one we had ordered, and 3 free deserts. Lovely food, esp the charcoal grilled Lamb. And their Turkish wines are very enjoyable too.
The food was ok could of been abit more better but when they cooked my chicken it wasn't real all dat
The good was nasty presentation was so rubbish and the food was not cooked
