Speedicars now Keen

Your Hopes and Fears have been realised. Speedicars is changing.

Fred reports that Speedicars have been taken over by the Keen Group, a major South East London fleet operator. Local journeys are now £6 rather than £5, for some reason only they know.

That's a shame - I have always found speedicars to be reliable. I hope that continues!

Does this mean that they will now:
(a) employ drivers who are civil and have manners;
(b) employ drivers who seemingly have a grasp of the highway code;
(c) employ drivers who seemingly know the local area and won't just say "That's not the postcode I was told - I'm not taking you there",
Can someone recommend another good, reliable, polite local taxt firm please?

You could say costs are... Spiralling?

Gutted! Speedicars used to be excellent. Bad experience already yesterday. Call taker had no local knowledge and tried to charge us an extra £5 for an estate car!

Forest Hill Cars are good

Agree - didn't use them very often but when I did they were consistently excellent.

Speedicars already started charging extra for estate cars from at least early this year if not sooner. Used to really rate them and use them for every cab ride but they kept putting prices up and once they started being £5 to £10 more expensive for semi-local / airport trips respectively we went elsewhere. Good luck to them as part of Keen but with prices going up even more cant see we will use them when there are so many other local choices.

Can you recommend other taxi cheaper companies then?

I've used Speedicars for many years and always thought they were very reliable and prompt. Really hope the take over won't change this as really appreciate having a good local taxi service. I think the £1 increase for local journeys is in line with other local taxi company fares.

Had to get a cab earlier this week, queried why it was so expensive. Driver confirmed new owners are charging £1.50 extra fee on each journey. ('Keen' had also said the car would be with me straight away but I had to wait 25mins. Not impressed so far.)

for those traveling often I find this service very good. Quick response, same reasonable flat price to go or pick up from airports, and you can pay with your phone.

I've used Uber and was pleasantly surprised by their exec service to get home from Clerkenwell. I think I paid 45 pounds to get back to Brockley. I've tried to use it locally, but have never found an Uber X (the minicab version) ever in range...and I really don't want to pay executive prices for local journeys.

I'd never used Speedicars so I can't compare to them, but I had to use Keen the other day when another minicab company never turned up and it was the first number to come up in a search. It was a bit cheaper than the other company. The car was a people carrier - very clean, marked that it was a minicab, and the driver was pleasant enough. I had no problems with booking and got a text to tell me the license plate of the car, and a text to tell me the car was outside. Based on this experience I'd use them again.

How about Hailo - you get a cab quite quickly as they sit on the rank in Lewisham. Get the app register your card and off you go. They have a live satellite feed so you can see the cab coming and call the driver as well as getting his registration number.

I have used Speedicars for many trips, and always reliable. Came back yesterday from overseas with 100 kg of university equipment in tow. Reserved a week ago while in Uk and when it was speedicars. When called to confirm yesterday, the reservation had been lost, and new reservation was quoted 30 pounds more, which we negotiated to just 10 pounds more. Warned them flight was delayed, but when I called to give them update from overseas airport, as was now 4 hr delay, Keen said the driver waiting for me at the London airport, so they had not been tracking the plane. In the end, a very good (other) driver waiting for us at Gatwick this morning, but communications and switchover has been a shambles. They may have lost a loyal customer.

can't comment, I have never taken a taxi locally. Brockley is very well connected and in Central London black cabs are best. To pick you up long distance and return you to Brockley speedycars always apply a double charge. So in my specific case Uber is a cheaper and more suitable solution.

Gutted. I used to use Speedicars regularly and found the service to be pretty good. Today we tried (unknowingly when we called the number) the new lot. The driver went to X Road rather than X Mews. The car was in very poor condition and the inside smelled of wee - we both felt like throwing our clothes in the wash when we got out. And the driver had no idea where the Horniman Museum was.... I'll give them one more go to redeem themselves, but I think we'll be finding a new cab company.

Has anyone ever noticed the Speedicar drivers chucking their litter into the street along Harefield Road? I have seen this on a number of occasions and called up once to report a driver. A lot of the MPV's wait up there and when they drive off you often see junk food litter where the drivers side window was.

the price of a taxi from Brockley to London City Airport was £10 higher with Keen Group than we were quoted a few weeks back with Speedy Cars. We went with Crofton Park Cars in the end. They were £5 less than Keen Group. Still pricier than Speedy. Definitely a shame.

Well, we've tried Dulwich Cabs over the past few days when we've needed taxis (including one to and from Heathrow) - very clean, punctual and polite, and pretty reasonable rates. Looks like I've found a new preferred supplier - but would be good to have a back-up on hand, as I definately won't be using Keen.

Ordered a cab for a pick up at New Cross station. It was raining and my wife is pregnant. Saw the car at the top of the road stop and pick up someone else! Phoned the office and they apologised, said they were going to reprimand the driver and said another was on its way. It didn't get there for another 10-15....rubbish. Such a shame. Had used them for years. End of an era...

Keen Group have frozen out all the old speedicars drivers and they are leaving in droves. Don't use them.

I am currently a driver for Speedicars and have been for the past 12 years, since Keens have taken over the service both to the drivers and the customers has improved, yes the fares have gone up a little but we have not had a fare increase for years! We are more professional now and all the drivers I know - which is most of them will not be leaving anytime soon!!

The company has put local journeys to £6 from £5 . That's not a problem. It's the longer journeys have gone up tremendously. An £8.50 job I make daily went up to £11.50 when the takeover took place. I have changed to data cars prices are good. They send a text when your car is dispatched or arriving. Also honest switchboard staff about the timing. If they say within 15 mins that's the time your cab arrived.

My mum and brother just went from New Cross to Eltham - a journey that Speedicars used to charge £14 for - the driver went via Catford and charged £22. Total rip off, avoid.

We are a local family and have used Speedycars for several years and appreciated the all round value for money. Now very disappointed with the quality of the cars and pricing structure (and last week, returning late at night with two young children fro Gatwick, the quality of the driving) of the new company; a significant hike on airport and Ebbsfleet International fares, for example. I would appreciate any recommendations for alternative local taxi services.

I am used a company call OTH Minicabs in new cross, which covers a wide area around London including Brockley and they are very polite, drivers usually arrives on time and there prices are great especially for airports, you can also get a share a minicab for even a cheaper rate. I would recommend them especially loves that they send a text message with your booking details and driver car details are text to you.
