Bay thieves wing it

John writes:

Between 9pm last night and 8am this morning someone stole the bay tree from outside our house on Manor Avenue. It was a moving-in present and has been sitting there welcoming people to our house for 3 years.

It is around 4ft, has a very round top, was in a green ceramic pot and enjoyed getting dressed up for Chistmas. If someone spots it or is offered it please let us know (email here). The sneaky tree thief may have even changed its pot.

Sorry to hear about that. We also had two plants (one was a boxwood so fairly heavy) stolen from outside our home (on St Asaph Rd) in the last two months - in broad daylight while we were out. Very sad as we'd grown rather attached to our plants too.

This is a problem we had to deal with as soon as we got some similar trees (for exactly the same reason - moving in presents) - someone tried to steal but must have been disturbed. I resorted to very heavy pots combined with a small cable bike lock wrapped around the base of the trunk of each tree and fixed to a bracket that was fixed to the wall behind the pots. Extreme, but seems to have worked, touch wood. Security lights help as anyone sneaking up to the door gets bathed in a 100 watt glow as well.

I live on Manor Ave too... Sorry to hear about this. I remember when we moved in my dad suggested we decorate the front garden with those solar lights but my first thought was that they would probably last about 3 days before someone "collected" them... I love London and Brockley but lets face it, if it ain't nailed down, someone will have it...

So sorry to hear that. Some people have no honour any more. A couple of years ago someone stole the (very tiny) box plants I'd put in pots by our front door. So I tied the replacements to the house with wire. They didn't have the literal or sentimental value of your bay, but I couldn't believe someone would bother. How cheap can you get. I have to say I'm still surprised to find our window box there when I open the curtains each morning!
