UKIP's Lewisham Mayor candidate arrested for alleged sex assault on homeless Bulgarian man

Yesterday, on this site, reader Tim argued that "I want to vote UKIP because even though I think they're all weirdos, a vote for UKIP is a vote for change." Today, the News Shopper reports:

The UKIP candidate to be Mayor of Lewisham has been arrested following an alleged sexual assault on a homeless Bulgarian man. Civil servant Peter Lello was arrested on May 15 after an allegation of sexual assault made four days earlier.

Change you can believe in...

You can't even make this stuff up! I'd say it's unbelievable, but it is.

Shocking stuff, had the victim been Romanian then I would have thought this was made up.

UKIP are always trying to screw the eastern Europeans but sounds like this guy may have taken that a bit too literally...

This is amazing. I would say:

a) Innocent until proven guilty
b) The timing is very suspicious
c) Politicians from all parties get convicted of crimes. That doesn't reflect on the party.

I have to admit my judgement is sometimes very poor - I protested Lance Armstrong's judgement until the end!

That tinfoil hat is very fetching, Tim

A and C are fair comments. The timing is due to the timing of the assault. And I hardly think UKIP is a credible threat in the Mayoral election, so I doubt anyone could be bothered to cook up a conspiracy.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article 11.1. Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.

The 'presumption' is therefore 'in the eyes of the law' - in a public trial - and not in the minds of the general public prior to it;.
Romanian neighbours may then speculate all they want (publicly). Voters too.
Caveat emptor: if he has not been charged.
Has he...?

Avoid controversy, Vote Keogh

Doesn't he know it should have been a Romanian? No hope for UKIP if they go off message like this.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights, well UKIP will pull out of any international codes so thats him stuffed.

Your chosen candidate Peter Lello has called for his supporters 2nd preference to be given to People Before Profit which is like Enoch Powell chumming up with Peter Thatchel. That's because he's a clown, like his party. Of you pop then, the polls close at 10:00pm
