All these diggers and all these holes in here, somebody's got no truck!

BCer Jim is angry. He writes*:

If you have been around Hilly Fields lately, if not you better watch it. There are about 100 ankle deep holes by some 18yo metal-detecting person. I fell in two thinking they were dogs digging to China.

Someone ran into the kid and asked him what he was doing digging up the entire field. He says he has a license from the council which we all know is rubbish. I attached a picture of potential ankle breaking holes!

I'm putting together a posse to get that boy.

You can all thank me later, the hanging will be tomorrow outside Top Chef.

I wondered about these holes, which I discovered when a tennis ball I threw for my dog disappeared mysteriously! If it's true that it's some idiot kid with a metal detector he needs to be stopped. And preferably charged with criminal damage.

Tom said...

I have seen many kids around Brockley selling, buying and taking drugs, a young guy collapsing after just being stabbed and various fights. But no Jim is right, this metal detecting hole digger must be a priority.

maisie_moo said...

By that logic you wouldn't have public money for parks in the first place, let alone looking after them.

Must have been by that graffiti of Bob Marley and Floella Benjamin which is a Mecca for gangster rap and crime. Be glad when Conway tear it all down and build a Nandos.

barry bucknell said...

Thankfully I don't believe Conways are in the building demolition or creation industry - but with Lewisham Councils history of outsourcing to people who can't actually do what they're tasked to do, it's only a matter of time.

Luckily anything that Brockley Nick doesn't actually witness himself doesn't exist

You know that's Maya Angelou don't you... with green death ray eyes

Brockley Nick said...

I just think you have to be extraordinarily unlucky to have witnessed all of these things and for this daily deluge of human misery to be so overwhelming that all other trials and tribulations are an irrelevance. I'm surprised Tom hasn't fled the area by now. It sounds horrible.

It's not particularly funny. As a regular park user it actually looks really terrible and he's caused a fair bit of damage. Let's hope no-one else joins in. There is a bylaw that prohibits use of metal detectors in parks. Also hope someone can repair said holes properly

I fell into one just like those yesterday in Clapham Common.

@Brockley Nick You must have your eyes shut then. I've seen a fair amounts of fights and blatant open dealing to kids in my time here... most would be easily seen on cctv.
Quite sad really... I think I've almost come to accept it... and mind my own business, that doesn't mean I like it or condone it.
But polite society does wish to get involved... anymore. See no evil, Speak no evil, Hear no evil. I'm just not as publicly spirited as I once was, I'll just winge like the rest and keep myself to myself.

anonymouse said...

I've seen a middle aged couple metal detecting in the same bit of park. Didn't look local (go on, ask me what I mean by that).

Anon said...

'extraordinarily unlucky' really... ignorance is bliss and sadly your only defense. I thought you were better than that. Bang goes the neighborhood ;)

Headhunter said...

I agree... Why do we get these comments "how can the council spend money on parks/trees/Christmas decorations when kids are dealing in drugs/gun crime is rife/people are getting stabbed...". Is the council supposed to direct every single penny it spends into social issues at the complete expense of everything else in the Borough?!

AliAfro said...

The council can allocate resources to fighting crime and protecting our parks - the two are not mutually exclusive.
Besides, I've been in Brockley for 7 years and I'm a regular visitor to Hilly Fields. I have seen 0 stabbings, and 0 drug deals. I have seen a few fights (mostly snowball fights) and there is the occasional waft of weed on a sunny afternoon. But then, kids do have fights and smoke weed...

Bad stuff will happen occasionally (it does everywhere) but the very fact that the generation of grass divots by illicit metal detection is local news, is testament to how rare the anti-social stuff is.

Anon said...

Is this really news? and of any real merit @Brockley Nick?

Surely anyone causing damage to Hilly Fields, should be first spoken to by the Glendale?, who I think look after the area and if necessary inform the SNT.
As for other more serious anti social behavior and crime, that should clearly involve the SNT first.

It's not an April fools throw back Thursday is it?... July fools? or something.
This story is a filler... right... a bad one at that... Can't we have something like, cat stuck up a tree... rescued by 92yr old woman with a slice of posh Serrano ham. I'm sure you can work in hunky firemen in and which local deli the ham was bought from, the old lady's love of cats ;) Maybe this blogs ran it's course?

I preferred your earlier, incisive contribution to this debate: "I am a mole and i live in that hole."

Anon said...

I am wholly aware of the hole that's being dug by this topic and urge you to fill it in, with a more upbeat filler. Rather than the botox your currently using ;) by the way we live in the same hole 8|

Para.11 of the London Borough Lewisham (LBL) 1980 Pleasure Ground Byelaws clearly states that "A person shall not in the pleasure ground [Hilly Fields] remove, or displace any gravel, soil, turf, plant or tree" and that Para.21 states that "Every person who shall offend against these byelaws shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding fifty pounds." The Byelaws are currently being updated and the fine is expected to be increased from the 1980 level. Greenscene (LBL section in charge of Hilly Fields) never issue 'licences'. If there is an injury to a person or property (e.g. dog) as a result of the hole digging, then legal action can be taken against the person. Anyone spotting this person should contact the police on 101, and/or inform the park-keeper and/or Greenscene as a first step. A male with a light blue shirt, detector and hand-trowel was reported last Sunday (29th June) in action during the day near the painted fallen tree which suggests that this anti-social believes he has the 'right'. Note there could be more than one in action. Some of the holes are deep enough to break a running dog or child's leg - the carers of whom will not be amused either.

Friend of Hilly Fields Park said...

Metal detecting is not specifically prohibited in the current Lewisham "pleasure ground byelaws" probably because they date from 1980. It is the subsequent soil/turf disturbance that is. Anyone who knows of any applicable London/nation wide regs - please let us know!

who?

NAT said...

'Metal detecting Forum' wrings it's hands about metal detecting in public parks. It doesn't appear to occur to these good people that someone might just rock up and leave a whole load of unfilled holes all over the place. How would that be imaginable?

Brockley Nick said...

Of course lots of things have happened over a number of years. But to have seen them all (not just sirens, or reports - the actual incident) you'd have to be very unlucky. Let's be clear, the original comment was grumpy, irrelevant hyperbole.

Danja said...

Come off it Nick, you know in your heart of hearts it would be better not to post anything between stabbings.

Fresh holes appeared this morning.

More holes reported as appearing to have been dug late on Wed 9th July - in particular in the area to the west of the cafe.
