Malpas flooded

Malpas Road was closed this morning due to flooding, the result of a burst water main. Six basement flats were damaged by the water. The road has now been reopened. These two tweets this morning may have been related to one another:

Whilst I was walking back from the station around 9:30pm last night, there was a man in hi-viz and a headtorch poking a long pole into a hatch in the road at the junction of Vulcan Road and Malpas Road... I'm no detective, but I suspect the two events might be related.

OK, so I couldn't get the image upload to work.

The water main on or about that junction and up the hill by The Wickham has gone bust several times in the last few years, not quiet to this extent though.

Just sent a link to this to my friend Mr Tharle. That was a waste of time then.

There's been something up with the water flow for a few days now. I've noticed that when I turn the tap on in our kitchen, it doesn't come on gradually as you twist the tap, there's nothing for a while and the tap feels "loose" and then all of a sudden the water comes gushing out and sprays everywhere and you have to quickly turn it down again.

We had something similar a few years ago, I used to turn the kitchen tap on and the water would come out in "pulses" rather than a steady flow. This lasted a few months IIRC....

We were one of the flats flooded - although our neighbours were much worse off. The clean up operation by Thames Water was great, and the response by the Fire Brigade. Unfortunately no one could actually get through to Thames Water's emergency phone line - major fail - so you can't actually talk to anyone although you can tweet about it (I don't know about you but it's not really what I want to be doing when I'm up to my knees in water).
