The New Cross-Lambeth North express: Number 53 depowered until March

The Number 53. King of buses. Growing up in south east London, it was the closest thing we knew to a loving god. Oh sure, Thor was more useful and the 54 was cooler, but the 53 - with its long, sinuous route - meant that it would soon appear by our side whenever we were lost and alone - our scarlet sentinel.

But TfL is doing a Delilah to the 53, lopping off its route, so that from January 17th until March 29th, its journey will end at the fairly useless Lambeth North due to nearby roadworks.

Bus travel, already annoying at the best of times, just got worse. To do it without warning at a time when South East London's public transport system is in chaos, is ridiculous.

TFL hates South East London shocker. Anyone believes that the Bakerloo Line will be extended here in our lifetime is deluded. Their West London backers won't allow it to happen.

when i first moved to london i lived in woolwich. 1st day of college one of the lecturers said we should defo get the 53 all the way to town. my word it took a long time, but it was only 70p(i think). great days!

No point mourning the 53 like it's dead. We need to agitate! Them slices at TfL don't give a monkies about us. The fact that the only announcement was this week on the bus itself shows what contempt the authorities have for us. Contact Len Duvall. He'll sort TfL out.

PS - You mess with the 53, you mess with Millwall. Just saying.

Easy for them. It's an essential and long route. With single trip flat fares, forcing people to change buses doubles their revenue over a route. It's a way of forcing up fares without the press noticing.

Make your complaint. Don't just suffer in silence.

Nick, your article doesn't make it clear that this is a temporary adjustment whilst Bridge Street is closed for 2 months for resurfacing/restructuring works. It's still annoying though. I'm still bemoaning the loss of the X53 - that was a bus that got you places slighltly-quicker-but-not-as-quickly-as-you'd-hoped.

If it's temporary and down to road closures, where are these publicised, and will the 453 be diverted? There's been no announcement on that route yet.

I didn't make that clear, because I wasn't clear. I suppose that's what happens when they don't provide any information. I've tweeted TfL, asking for the full details and will update the article accordingly. Whatever way you cut it, it's poor form to truncate the route at precisely the same time that you're messing with everyone's trains.
