The Rosemary, 178 New Cross Road

Hungarian restaurant The Rosemary is now open.

Located at 178 New Cross Road and replacing Cafe 178, it looks like a restaurant drawn by a primary school child - the kind of place you might stumble into on a European road trip. And it's all the better for it.

What it tastes like, we have no idea - we only realised it was open when we cycled past this morning - but the menu looks similarly classic, consisting of simple dishes like Shashlik skewers with a range of meats and vegetables, stuffed cabbage, fried cheese and beef stew. To complete the old-fashioned effect, nothing on the menu is more than a tenner.

Looks like good honest fare with no mention of "slaw" "house slaw" or any other annoying abbreviation of coleslaw, also there is no mention of equally annoying "street food" which is often seen bizarrely in sit down places.

If a waiter takes your credit card for payment just keep an eye on it or he'll be out the back booking flights to bring his extended family over here.

You seem to be confusing Hungarians with Australians.

ahahah this is so mean! btw are the romanians the bad guys, hungarians should be fine.

there are at least two Romanians in Brockley, taking food off the table of hard-working local families (sometimes it's Tickle Me takeaway).

Gordon is a moron (old music reference) in this case, methinks. HF's comments seem reasonable, and I see no reference to "'hipster' places" in them. If Gordon's like this in real life - and he really is - then Gordon's a twat. Am I permitted to twat on here?

As Eric has said my comment was reasonable and in fact said in praise of this new honest eatery. I don't think it deserved the vitriol spouted by Gordon.

Very tastey! Went there last night. Had the beef stew and stuffed cabbage - both of which were very nice. Very reasonable prices, sensible portion sizes (not too large, not too small). Friendly staff. Would reccomend!

Have gone a couple of times in the last month. Really nice staff and good hearty food (not shy with the portions!). We've had the goulash starter and roast pork main, both very good and excellent value. The two times we've been there's also been live music from local groups which made for a vibrant atmosphere....would thoroughly recommend.
