Asda opens on Deptford High Street

Asda has opened its new small-format store at 5-9 Deptford High Street. The opening is part of the chain's southern strategy and puts it head-to-head with Tesco further down the street. Asda plans another store opening in Lewisham.

Full disclosure: Asda is a client of my employer.

Replaced a great poundland and I mean that, no irony, when I used to live that way it was my go to shop for most household items. Asda was not needed at all.

Agree. Can't really see the point of having this store so close to the Tesco. They could have at least put it down the other end of Deptford High Street.

Deptford HS is turning into mini supermarket and betting shop alley....!

To be fair its always been a crap stinky high street, at least these new supermarkets will be clean. Few nice bars and cafes there now also and the new facilties in the locale (library/gym) put Brockley to shame.
Yes, Lady Progress has been kind to Deptford.

I think this is a great addition; much bigger than the Tesco which I can't see surviving long.

I think you are exaggerating about the poundland. It was only a 99p shop after all ;-)

It is improving but bloody slowly. Give it another 10 years and you might be able to walk down there with your phone out or use an atm without checking over your shoulder.

Best Deptford supermarket is easily Houswives Cash and Carry. A mini Asda isn't going to change that fact!

Shed, I've already been walking down the high street doing both of those things for many years. I think the problem may be yourself.

Replacing Poundland with ASDA is a like for like really though, there are about 20 "everything over a pound" shops that are rotting away down that road, it's also right next to a londis. Deptford highstreet is a mess, I have no idea how those £+ shops carry on paying their rent and business rates, I've never seen enough customers in there to make anything other than a massive loss. Poundland was always busy and legit.

It's rare in London to get such a nicely defined high street that isn't too large, it's a complete waste for everyone.

Didn't they merge though? Who bought out whom? The poundland next to the station is next door to an Iceland as well, Deptford high street make me sad!

Still go down though for Panda Panda and the chinese market shops.

Most of the shops down there smell and the end of the market is bascially a trampfest. Yes Poundland is the best (and cleanest) pound shop down there so shame to see it go.

Wasn't there hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on Deptford High Street improving the area by contractor's Conway, but the area still looks a mess!

It's a click and collect, so it'll be useful for those Asda shoppers who like the prices, shop online and live round here and don't want to go up the Old Kent road.
