The season starts on June 22nd with Jaws and ends on October 27th with The Exorcist. Tickets start at £12 and are available here.

Cake Tempest

Brockley's answer to UB40, Kate Tempest, launches her new album at the Rivoli Ballroom later this month, with a live performance for the BBC.

Superhumans at The Rivoli

Channel 4's new Paralympics trailer is out. 2012's Public Enemy comfortably beats 2016's Big Band sound but this one has the Rivoli Ballroom and Brockley Central is contractually obligated to document any appearance of the velvet walls.

After the Avengers, this is the second superhuman team to base themselves there.

Thanks to Transpontine for spotting it.

No trash talk, no back walk

This is the shortest but coolest Rivoli appearance in history. Ten seconds in. Dance off!

The Rivoli relocates to Walford

Stock Character 1: It's hardly the Rivoli is it?
Stock Character 2: Is the Rivoli still there?
- EastEnders

Last year, the BBC promised to gentrify Albert Square, to reflect the changing face of modern London. Last night, the first fruits of this strategy began to emerge, when Brockley's Rivoli Ballroom got a namecheck - its majesty held up in contrast to the abject party taking place in Walford.

Bring back real Walford! EastEnders hasn't been the same since the arrival of the East London Line.

It's 24 mins in, if you're interested.

Rivoli Fundraiser for the Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign

Iain writes:

The last fundraiser sold out and we were turning people away at the door. Obviously, we were all still high from the victory in the high court, but I think the last year has shown how important it is that we continue, which means we need funds.

The trust has to make 5% 'savings' every year for the next 5 years (25% over 5 years) and the local CCGs have coalesced to work on a south east London plan. It is likely that Lewisham hospital's services and land will be recommended as a sacrifice to the cuts and PFI liabilities... Again...

Avengers: Age of Brockley

Alexander Pierce: Captain, to build a better world, sometimes means tearing the old one down... And that makes enemies.
- Captain America 2

Age of Ultron is the story of a monomaniacal intelligence that lives through the Internet

Gone are the days when BC had to come up with spurious excuses to include the Avengers in article headlines - Avengers: Age of Ultron is filming at The Rivoli Ballroom today and Captain America (Chris Evans) has just been spotted crossing Brockley Road. It is currently filming at Shepperton Studios and using the codename After Party.

Full disclosure: The agency BC works for has Disney for a client, which is the parent company of Marvel. Still, makes a nice change from having to disclose Sainsbury's. Thanks to Kevin for the heads-up.

The Rivoli Ballroom up for sale (again)

The Rivoli Ballroom is up for sale for £7.5 million.

Its current owners put it on the market for £10 million back in 2007. That move triggered a campaign to protect it from being turned into flats or a supermarket and it was given Grade II listed status as a result. This planning restriction gave the sellers cause to reconsider and in the years that followed, the Rivoli's fame has grown, as a location for film, television and music, as well as dance, cabaret and parties.

The new, lower price-tag presumably reflects the fact that it will be harder to bulldoze and turn into something more lucrative.

Despite the fact that it can be maddeningly hard to book and its calendar of events is erratic, the Rivoli is nonetheless Brockley's greatest man-made treasure and its owners have been loving custodians. The relatively few public events it holds have helped to preserve its features, while the eccentric booking process means that some gloriously unusual events take place there.

If and when the Rivoli is sold, we have to hope that the new owners take as much care with it. If they have to recoup £7.5m from it, that will be a tricky balancing act to get right.

Rivoli Most Wanted

Muppets Most Wanted gets a selected release this weekend. Among the celebrity cameos is the Rivoli Ballroom, whose velvety walls are the perfect setting for a Muppet musical. It shows up several times in this trailer and if Statler and Waldorf aren't featured as Brockley trolls, then they have missed a trick.

Damon Albarn plays the Rivoli

The Guardian reports that

Damon Albarn will perform two shows in London this spring, confirming dates at both the Rivoli Ballroom [April 30th] and The Great Hall at Queen Mary University of London.

To mark the release of his first solo album Everyday Robots, the Blur frontman will debut tracks from the new record with a band including guitarist Seye, drummer Pauli The PSM, bassist Jeff Wootton and Mike Smith on keys, at the two intimate venues: the first being a 700 capacity ballroom and the second a 780 capacity hall.

Strictly Rivoli

Chris writes:

In the next of the National Trust's London Lates, the Rivoli Ballroom in South London will play host to an immersive film experience inspired by Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom, presented by the London Project and Hacked Off Films.

For one night only you can live your ballroom dream.  A flamenco guitarist and a dance coach will get you in the mood before ‘Scott’ dances past recalling Strictly Ballroom’s much loved Paso Doble scenes. This is a unique opportunity to waltz beneath the chandeliers, Chinese lanterns and glitter balls in the plush red velvet interiors of the Rivoli.

Hacked Off Films and the London Project will also be presenting a full screening of Strictly Ballroom. Dance yourself silly at the Strictly Ballroom disco with recognisable tracks from the film and more classic dance numbers. There are many more surprises in store on the night at this Strictly Ballroom extravaganza.

Tickets are available from www.nationaltrust.org.uk/london: £26 (£20 for students)
