The Telegraph Hill Community Choir

The Telegraph Community Choir write:

We are a group of enthusiastic singers. We meet once a week on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 to 9pm at the Telegraph Pub on Dennett's Road.

We sing lots of rounds, and harmonies, on folk songs, sea shanties, pop, African and world folk, in fact, any songs with heart and soul.

We are very mixed bunch, some of us have not sung since childhood, others are more seasoned singers.

Our leader, Lizzie, has worked in music all her life, and sings professionally. She is also a music teacher, workshop leader, and songwriter. One of her songs was recently short listed in a big song competition in Scotland, and she has also composed for BBC TV.

We are a fun, lively group, who welcome new people, we are expanding all the time. Please come along. Each session costs £6.

The Telegraph Hill Festival 2018

Sanjit writes:

The 2018 Telegraph Hill Festival is here, and takes place from 10 - 25 March 2018.  Telegraph Hill Festival is London's largest and best independent, self-funding, and volunteer driven festival, and one of the capital's best-kept secrets.

Athena Kugblenu at the 2017 Telegraph Hill Festival Comedy Night
The 24th Telegraph Hill Festival has more than 120 events, with 74 free of charge.  Events take place across Telegraph Hill, from St Catherine's Church to the Five Bells and Goldsmiths to The Telegraph pub.  There are lots of highlights, here are just a few...

  • West Side Story - a cast of 260 delivers one of musical theatre's most compelling story's across fours shows on 10/11 March 2018 at St Catherine's Church
  • On Sunday 11th March too, best-selling author and reluctant futurist Mark Stevenson puts our turbulent times into perspective with an accessible, funny and challenging talk and Q&A about the future of society and technology
  • Monday 12th March has - for the first time - a Comedy Impro Night featuring the Stephen Frost Impro All Stars in dazzling feats of inventive and surreal comedy, literally, making it up as they go along...
  • Moving Hearts: A Clay Workshop is on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th March and invites you to take part in an exploration of the issues of belonging and migration and help make some of the 1000 hearts needed for an installation piece in the Migration Museum in Spitalfields (free)... meanwhile in the evening we explore the Lost Island of New Cross, an illustrated talk exploring the history and mythology of the White Hart junction in New Cross Gate and its lost traffic island.
Open Mics, Poetry Slams, Caribbean Folksong, Quizzes, Music Jams, Disco Bingo, the welcome return of an uplifting evening of choirs at Telegraph Hill Sings, Exploring the Radical History of New Cross, Classics on the Hill (with the added pizzazz of an amazing light spectacular), experimental journeys in sound with Sonic Imperfections, Open Studios, a Woodland Folk Festival, A night of Jazz featuring world-class musicians... ever get the idea there might be something interesting here?

Saturday Night Jam, October 7th

Philippa writes:

I am hosting an open mic night and jam session as a charity fundraiser on 7th October at The Hill Station in Telegraph Hill.

I'm hoping to get together a diverse group of musicians from different genres, and of different ages, to play and socialise together, with all the money raised going to Child.org who work with kids in Ghana, Kenya and Uganda.

Tickets start at £10, depending on whether people want to play or just listen, and are being sold online here

Death Race 2017: Telegraph Hill Soap Box Derby

To take part in the event, your car needs to have some sort of steering mechanism!
The first ever Telegraph Hill Soap Box Derby will take place on September 10th. Organiser Martin writes:

Absolutely anyone is welcome to build a cart, show it off, race it round the course (if you're over 10)... and then pick up the pieces!  Carts can be a team effort or the enterprise of individuals, made by kids, families, schools or you and some mates. Your cart could be really quite simple or a highly engineered speed machine. So dig those wheels out of the skip and get building! And don’t forget to have fun with your team theme.

A day of family fun and smashing entertainment.

Entry fee is £15 and they very wisely ask you to sign a disclaimer before you throw yourselves down one of London's steepest slopes.

Full details of the event here.

Cat locked in suitcase found in Telegraph Hill

Gill writes:

My husband found this poor cat locked in a suitcase in Telegraph Hill this morning. We have it at home and are taking it to Celia Hammond, so if anyone wants to give it a home, you know where to go.

Mast of the Phantasm

Nigel writes:

A huge mobile phone transmitter has appeared on top of the council block at the corner of Pendrell Road and Wallbutton Road.

This block has a permanently leaky roof, but the council has seen fit to add to their plight by allowing Vodafone to build a massive scary transmitter on their roof without any form of consultation. They complained to their local counsellor Luke Sorba, who assured them that this was legal. We don't believe it's 'right' though.

So there is this petition, which has just started [BC: And which evokes the phantasm of radiation], with the aim of persuading the Council to remove it.

The Telegraph Hill Festival 2017

Into the Woods at last year's Festival
Sanjit writes:

Telegraph Hill Festival celebrates the arts and the diverse, creative community in this part of South East London.

The 2017 Telegraph Hill Festival has a huge range of events spread out over  16 days from 25 March to 9 April 2017.

In addition to the large scale musical, cabarets and classical music concerts, we have: new young comedians; music from around the world; amazing art in new venues; roaming art in a caravan; workshops for parents on young people’s mental health; a frank look at sex and the pressures on young people; walks exploring radical social history, art and architecture; new theatre; new films; new music; food experiences; new ways of story telling.

There’s more that’s fun and fabulous in equal measure – from sing alongs with Lady LaLa to solving a Murder Mystery; Disco Bingo to dancing into the early hours at The Golden Anchor.

In its 23rd year, Telegraph Hill Festival shows what working together as volunteers to celebrate our creative community can achieve.

Now, it’s over to you. Come along, support your Festival, have fun!

Silent Hill

This is day late, but worth the wait. This paranormal activity on Telegraph Hill is part of a Halloween arms race, which has seen Brockley homes stage more and more elaborate festive frights.

With thanks to Lindsay for the video.
