Welcome to the new-look Brockley Central

Well done Brockley Jon! The site redesign is thanks to his work and expertise and we hope you agree it's a great leap forward. It's now easier to make suggestions for new stories and there is a permanent home for the photography of the Brockley Flikr group, which is really impressive and captures the spirit of Brockley far more vividly than we could manage.

The redesign is timely, because the site has experienced significant growth in the number of people reading, searching and posting comments recently. When we first began, we were stupidly excited if we got one comment in response to our articles. This week, the article about the £10,000 community fund set a new BC record of 97 comments (and counting).

This week has also created two more records:

The highest-ever number of visitors was on Monday, with 259
The highest-ever number of pages viewed was yesterday, with a total of 1,060

In the coming weeks, you will see further changes to the site. The plan is to create a dedicated section for places to eat and drink and, longer-term, to explore the options regarding a proper forum.

The main sources of visitors to the site (after the all-powerful Google) are Britblog.com followed by Findaproperty.com, Kateshomeblog (though we suspect most of those are Kate herself!), Wikipedia and Facebook.

But our favourite stat is the number of posts the site has generated: 1,227 so-far. As well as a growing list of regular commentators, we've also had contributions from Councillors, community activists, businesspeople, artists and campaigners. Every one has enriched the site and made it what it is today. So thank you everyone and long may the sun shine on Brockley.

The new look is really good in my opinion as a new user of your blog. I only came across it the other day and have been reading it constantly since.

Thanks for starting it and for updating it so frequently.

The number of posts shows that there is room for a Brockley forum.

Setting up a food and drink resource would be excellent.

This is a really great site and source of information. Since discovering it about 4 weeks ago, I read it often.

One useful resource would be names of local contractors/businesses which people have found to be good/reliable etc: plumbers, electricians, decorators etc.

This is an absolutely brilliant site. Moving to the area soon and stumbled across it one day. Been reading with interest since. Great to see how it has taken off. Nick obviously puts a lot of effort into researching all the articles. So a big thank you there. The new design will also let grow into much more. Well done guys.

Aw - thanks all! *blush*

It's not perfect... yet, but as Nick says, there's a lot more to come. Cheers for all the suggestions.

Well done to Brockley Nick and Brockley Jon. This blog is very encouraging and is a real example of the community spirit in Brockley. They are the 1st people to truly highlight the good (as well as the challenging) points about Brockley, not some of these glossy mags that are posted through my door about South-East London, with absolutely no mention of Brockley...why even bother!

Again, thank you so much, I visit this blog everyday with great anticipation about what's going on in Brockley. First it was Facebook, now it's Brockley Central...lol!

Apprently Google are sniffing around Brockley Central. Could Jon and Nick be the first Brockley billionaires? If I was a woman I'd marry them quick.

Nick, please check to make sure the new layout works with Firefox, I can only view the blog now via internet explorer (which I only have at work)!

Brockley Nick said...

Andy, this reply comes to you via Firefox, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Perhaps Jon might know.

Andy Pandy Pudding & Pie said...

Ah ok. For some reason I can only view the old style layout (the last article relating to the Brockley Common Proj). Only when I go into the site Do i get re-directed to the new layout.

I'll check my comp. for latest updates. Thanks anyway.

Andy Pandy, sounds like you might need to do some hard refreshing (!) by pressing Ctrl+F5, or clear your browser cache. It should work better in Firefox than it does in Internet Explorer! :) Any IE6 users, I'm aware of a few niggles, but most people are using IE7 nowadays.

In relation to the contents of the blog, I cannot take any credit - there wouldn't be a blog at all if it wasn't for the dedication of Brockley Nick and his sharp investigative journalism skills. Thank you Nick!

God, don't start the whole 'journalism' debate again, look what happened last time.

Brockley Nick said...

I concur, Monkeyboy!

I've been meaning to post a couple of things here for a while... The new (well, not-so-new anymore) design is great, but a few suggestions:

- can you change the date format from US to proper (dd/mm/yyyy) at the bottom of posts? (post-timestamp)

- the comments link at the bottom of posts should go to the brockleycentral page, not the generic blogger comments list. The link is correct in the recent comments list on the right (more).

- could you remove the "width:60%" rule for the p.description in the header? It forces the text to wrap so that "SE4" floats over "Latest News"

Of course you can ignore all of this if you like. I do enjoy the site.

I just wanted to extend my thanks to the BC team for opening up this forum - it's heartening to know that so many other people feel so strongly about local issues.

I would like to get more involved in local issues, but don't really know where to start. Having looked at the BXAG and the BS website, it seems that both have similar goals, but are split on areas. As a resident of Foxberry Road, which one would i attend?

Secondly, whom would I contact to find out the actual dates of the Farmers market on Hilly Fields, as I always seem to miss them! And finally, has there been any progress on the Christmas market front?

Thanks once again for this excellent site!

Good forum - I love Brockley. Look at this description of
our area by a Brockley letting
agent – I think it sums us up. Brockley definitely is a “secret gem”!

Oops, didn't add the link - Brockley letting agent http://www.portmoor.co.uk/rent-brockley.html – I think it sums us up. Brockley definitely is a “secret gem”!
