Clement & Black, October 26

| Meet Jo Black & Will Clement |
Based in Honor Oak, Will Clement & Jo Black organise wine tasting evenings in the Greater Brockley area, with their next event taking place at Honor Oak cafe Two Spoons on October 26th. They say:
"Two Spoons maestro Luca will kick us off in authentic Italian style with seasonal cocktails. Then we'll taste 8 beautiful wines along with some lovely food, plus our favourite single estate olive oil."

Open House London - Walter Segal Houses
The Lewisham self-build houses in Honor Oak Park, designed by Walter Segal, will be open to the public on Sunday 17 Sept as part of Open House London. The FREE event will be extra special for two reasons:
It is the 30th anniversary of Walters Way - the houses were completed in 1987.
A new book about the streets, written by two of the residents, has recently been published: Walters Way and Segal Close, by Alice Grahame and Taran Wilkhu.
Both Segal Close and Walters Way will be open to the public: Segal Close in the morning 10-1 and Walters Way in the afternoon 1-6.
Visitors will be able to see inside at least four homes across the two streets. The day will include films about Segal self-build, a pop-up cafe, and a display from RUSS - the new Segal inspired community self-build project.

The Laugh Train Home from Honor Oak

After running a successful comedy night (Laugh Train Home) in SW11 for over 3 years, I am starting a new weekly night at The Honor Oak Pub on June 13th.
The Laugh Train Home host will welcome Edinburgh preview shows from TV credited acts including John Robins (Mock the Week, Radio X), Ivo Graham (Live at the Apollo), Dane Baptiste (Hither Green superstar, writer of BBC sitcom Sunny D, Live at the Apollo & more), Sarah Kendall (two time Edinburgh Award nominee), Tom Deacon (Capital FM Breakfast Show host), and Ellie Taylor (Live at the Apollo).
Previews will be running until the Fringe starts from 8-10PM at the pub; tickets are £5 in advance / £7 at the door. Starting September 5th, Laugh Train Home's pro comedy nights will commence and will run weekly; tickets will be £6 in advance / £8 at the door.

Honor Oak sold to Laine's
Pub group and owners of The Ladywell Tavern and The Old Nun's Head, Laine's has bought the lease for the Honor Oak pub from the current owners the Camden Dining Group. I don't know what that really means, but a proper journalist who knows about beer reckons it's good news.

Fowl Mouths at Hopscotch

Fowl Mouths' Japanese comfort food has found a new home. They'll be serving at Hopscotch Cafe Bar in Honor Oak for Thursday and Friday nights from Friday 28th October to Friday 16th December 2016, with all their classics on the menu, inc Kara-age Chicken, Slow Cooked Pork Belly, and their Katsu Curry. Great news!

The Lewisham 3 Peaks Challenge – 16 July
A group of local residents has produced an illustrated map and guide to the walk with funding from Ladywell Assembly. The 5-mile circular route passes through parks and historic cemeteries, as well visiting some popular shopping streets, with plenty of pubs and cafes for refreshment stops.
The guide includes interesting historical information and suggests what to look out for along the way. For people coming from outside the area – or who want a short cut - there are plenty of transport links to join the route.
To launch the new walk, residents have teamed up with the Stephen Lawrence Trust and For Jimmy. A sponsored walk on Saturday 16 July will ‘christen’ the circular route and raise money for the charities.
Money is also being raised from the donations received for the maps and from sales of a special limited edition ‘Lewisham 3 Peaks Challenge’ t-shirt. This has been designed by Guardian cartoonist and local resident, Martin Rowson.

The Lewisham 3 Peaks Challenge
One of the best things about a walk up to Hilly Fields is the view out across to Lewisham's other green peaks when you get there. So this charity walk is a stroke of genius. The team explains:
Meet Lewisham's very own 3 Peaks Challenge in support of For Jimmy & The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. Saturday 16th July Hilly Fields Park, SE4 - 11.00am Join the launch of the new ‘3 Peaks Green Walk’ and take part in a sponsored walk in aid of two charities supporting young people.
A new five mile circular walking route links local green space (Hilly Fields, Ladywell Fields, Blythe Hill and One Tree Hill) with cafe-and-shop-lined streets. The walking route is designed to encourage anyone to explore and enjoy the local neighbourhood. For Jimmy and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust are joining with local residents to promote the very first fun hike along the new route. Our message is that our streets and parks are for everyone to enjoy, and we all benefit from making our neighbourhood a safe place for children to grow up in.

Honor Oak bar plan goes to appeal
Plans to convert a minimart on Honor Oak Park into a bar and beer garden have been given approval to appeal. On the SE23 Forum, the team behind "One Tree Hill" write:
We have now had our appeal validated for 66 Honor Oak Park to change the use from a minimart (A1) to a drinking establishment (A4). We are hoping that the final decision will be one to celebrate.
We are proposing to become a local neighbourhood bar with a strong community feel where people can enjoy meeting up and socialising after enjoying a meal at one of the other establishments... We would be offering a wide variety of drinks and a selection of nibbles and snacks, including artisan products that would be sourced from other small local businesses and local markets. We plan to hold events such as wine tasting evenings, offering a selection of unique wines and we strive to support the local community.
Thank you to everyone who is supporting us and the time and energy you have given throughout the process, we are truly so grateful.

This is their Third Runway, nay their Vietnam!Campaigners are trying to protect 30 trees on (ironically) One Tree Hill from being chopped down to make way for graves. This is an ongoing problem, with a shortage of space in Southwark for burial plots bumping up against a shortage of space for everyone else.
The living should take precedent over the dead. No more space for cemeteries. Cremate us and heat the local swimming pool with our bodies.

The Honor Oak Ladies Badminton Club has spaces for 2 new members.
We are a friendly group of an intermediate level who meet on a Wednesday 8.30-9.30 at Honor Oak Community centre. Bring your own racquet. Cost £6-£10 a month (depending on membership levels) – ladies only – sorry but we don’t take beginners.
We currently have a coach who trains us (roughly) once a month and we play games in the other sessions.
There is a mixed group who play 6.15-8.15 at the same location if anyone is looking for a mixed group. Again no beginners (sorry).

Brenchley Gardens Winter Wonderland
Brenchley Gardens is a beautiful sliver of parkland that runs between Camberwell New Cemetery and Aquarius Golf Club, at the south western extremity of Greater Brockley.
If you've never explored it, then the Brenchley Gardens Winter Wonderland on December 19th (12-5pm) is a good excuse to have a look.
The event itself will feature all the usual stuff: crafts, games, stalls selling local produce and plenty of food and drink. It takes place at the Don McCoan Community Centre (113-143 Brenchley Gardens).

The vast majority of new businesses that have successfully opened in the area in recent years are places where people do things other than shop - cafes, restaurants, bars, salons, takeaways. Of those shops that have prospered, many offer places to sit and drink or draw people in with events.
Thanks to the rise of internet shopping, the spread of small supermarkets and the area's increasing appeal to city commuters who shop in town before heading home, there are fewer and fewer gaps that local retailers can fill. Meanwhile, Londoners' shrinking homes and rising disposable incomes mean they want more places to hang out locally.
A while back, BC had a mild Twitter tiff with the Chair of Lewisham Council, Alan Smith about this issue. The development of 180 Brockley Road (which has plenty of room at ground level for a supermarket, but not much space for anything else), we contended, was more evidence that the Council didn't doesn't do enough to encourage the borough's experience economy and puts too much emphasis on providing shop space that people don't really want. He shot back: "What applications for bars have we turned down?" Well, here's one they're doing their best to knee-cap. Kate writes:
"I am one of the three friends who have applied for planning approval to open a local drinking establishment in Honor Oak Park called One Tree Hill.
"We've been waiting to hear back from the council on their decision before responding so we could provide further information. Unfortunately, we have been contacted by a Lewisham planning officer who has informed us that he will recommend refusal of our planning permission from A1 use to A4 due to concentration of A3/4 uses on the street.
"This is obviously disappointing news to hear, particularly as the feedback we have seen on the local online forums have shown great support for this. We, like you, believe the local community would benefit from a new and additional place to provide a local night out."
"We've been given an extension period to provide evidence from an estate agent to show that we were the only interested buyers. We are hopeful that the result will be positive.
"We notice there has been speculation gathering recently by local residents so we intend to post to explain more about who we are and what we want to offer and hope we can show the council the local community is behind us."

Campaigners bid to save Honor Oak Community Centre
It currently provides facilities for community activities and private parties, including wedding and funeral receptions. Its facilities include a Main Hall for up to 200 people and regular activities include sports, parent and toddler clubs and food bank services.

Solong, Sodo. Mamma Dough's bought you out
We would like to let SE23 know that Sodo as a concept and brand is no longer involved in Honor Oak Park. As of today the HOP restaurant will be @mamma_dough. We wish them all the best.
So that's that. BC never managed to make it along to Sodo, but the reviews from BCers were mixed and the Soho team always seemed to treat the HOP branch as the poor relation to their north London ones. They did, however, restore a long-closed restaurant and raised the bar for pizza in this part of the world, so we must be thankful for their short stay in the area. Mamma Dough looks like a like-for-like swap and that should prove to be a solid hit with the HipHOPsters. The best news is that a a restaurant that Sodo saved from obsolescence won't become dormant again.
