Gruff to Dragonfly Place
Local architects Gruff have relocated from their office next to The Orchard on Harefield Road to a much bigger studio in Dragonfly Place, Brockley Cross.
Founder Rhys writes:
"We have been growing steadily over the last few years and basically outgrown our Harefield office, which we’ll be very sad to leave. However we haven’t gone very far and we are keeping our old shop until the end of September, so that we can participate in the Openhouse weekend.
"I suspect there will be lots of interest in the old place from other businesses."
High quality shop fronts in Brockley are rare, but Gruff's old office is pretty tiny, so will not suit everyone.
Endwell Road launderette to close
Transpontine has spotted that the Endwell Road launderette, sandwiched between Dragonfly Place and the Business Centre, will be closing on September 18th, leaving only the Brockley Road launderette as a local option.
St Asaph Road garage owner sentenced for MOT fraud
The News Shopper reports:
"The owner of a Brockley garage has been sentenced after admitting MOT fraud, which saw 27 cars pass the test without being inspected.
"Spyros Katchis, owner of Dundalk Motors Testing Ltd in St Asaph Road, was found issuing MOT certificates without carrying out the physical test after a member of the public tipped off the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)."

For what it's worth, I bought my first house in Charlton via Conran and had a good experience with them. The other commercial occupants of the ground floor will be a new Sainsbury and a firm of architects.
Bohemia Hair, under new management
Bohemia, the Westside hairdresser (1c Mantle Road), is under new management and will be going through a re-brand shortly. In the meantime, it reopens on Tuesday and will be trading six days a week, reversing the previous owner's slightly self-defeating decision not to open on Sundays.
Opening hours will be Monday 12-8 Tues-Fri, 10-6 Sat, 9.30-5.30 Sun 11-4.

Journalist Simon Usborne has produced a paean to veteran Malpas Road barber Paul Neophytou. Writing in the Independent, he says
I have known Paul for 28 years but only learned his second name this week. "My name is Neophytou," he says while dropping a gown over me at Paul's, the South-east London hairdresser's he has run, latterly alone, for 52 years. "You can say it means 'new plant'," he adds, waving his clippers at the flourishing pots in front of the window.
Paul embodies that energy, which must be as old as scissors themselves. For more than half a century, he has watched hairlines recede, fashions change and lines around eyes map the advance of age and changing fortunes. New jobs, bereavement, illness, depression and big decisions: all of life has been here, and so has Paul. "It's a peaceful place, you know," he says. "There's no rush here and you can talk. My old mum always told me: 'Son, do not make enemies, make friends. Always be polite to people.' If you do this, people are nice to you and they talk to you.

Honor Oak Wellness Rooms Open Day
I'm the Practice Manager here at the Honor Oak Wellness Rooms. We are planning an open day on the 12th September, which is going to be a lovely (free) day of:15-minute massages, taster classes (yoga, Pilates, meditation), chiropractic consultations and talks, plus lots of food and drink.

Wandsworth Sash Windows comes to Crofton Park
When BCers run through their list of Fantasy Retail Occupiers, sash window providers come some way further down the list than pubs, gyms and delis. But Wandswotth Sash Windows' arrival at 355 Brockley Road is welcome nonetheless, filling a hole in Crofton Park and offering something people presumably want to buy.
The company, with an established showroom in Battersea, has occupied the unit left vacant by estate agents KFH when they moved to the opposite side of the street recently.
Lewisham Way Dry Cleaners reopens
This is old news but, having previously covered its closure, we ought to mention the happy news that the Lewisham Way Dry Cleaners (189 Lewisham Way) has reopened. They say:

From Bird of Paradise to Blue Tit
Brockley is to Peckham as Clapton is to Dalston. Achingly cool salon Blue Tit is opening on Brockley Road, taking over the slot previously occupied by the much-praised, seldom-frequented Bird of Paradise restaurant (258 Brockley Road).

The Honor Oak Wellness Rooms
The Honor Oak Wellness Rooms is a newly opened health and wellness space at 82 Brockley Rise [formerly Tai Wu Chinese restaurant] that specialises in chiropractic care to help manage pain and improve health.
We also offer yoga to improve fitness and well-being, with other therapies coming soon to the clinic. Our aim is to help our community live a pain free and healthy life. The types of conditions we treat include back and neck pain, lower back pain, shoulder and arm pain, sports injuries, migraines and headaches, trapped nerves and many more painful conditions.

Raising the barbers for Brockley Cross
Looks-wise, it's not the quantum leap that the Brockley Deli represented, but considering this unit used look like it had been disembowelled, this is a major improvement.
Phase One was "normalisation", with better policing and some much-needed investment in the physical realm. Phase Two is the "tidy up", with the various shops in the area being made over to improve their look and feel. Hopefully Phase Three is "profit".
