Brockley Nature Reserve Open Day

It's been a while since I last plugged the Brockley Nature Reserve - an obscure, inaccessible and beautiful wilderness on Vesta Road - so for those of you who haven't been reading religiously for the last nine years, it's worth mentioning that its next open day will be on Sunday, September 25th, 1-4pm.

The 4.2 hectare green space has a discrete entrance near the railway bridge and is also known as New Cross Gate Cutting. My insistence on calling it by its proper Brockley name used to cause outrage among the New Cross massive, but we've all moved on from that kind of petty provincialism now that we all have microbreweries and gastropubs coming out the wazoo. Nothing less than the wrong sort of teabag will trigger that kind of fury these days.

Help reopen the Brockley Nature Reserve

The Brockley Nature Reserve aka New Cross Gate Cutting has been closed to the public for the last few months and now Wild London is trying to organise a group of volunteers to get it open again. They explain:

Key to this will be the availability of a trained warden willing to volunteer, as London Wildlife Trust is lacking the staff and the resources to do it at the moment. This will be explained and discussed with a LWT representative at a meeting next week.

Brockley Nature Reserve open this weekend

The Nature Reserve will be open this Saturday from 10.30am until 3pm.  Come on down and have a wander around!

I am sorry to report that sometime in the last week or so a group of people (and I use that term loosely) took it upon themselves to broke into the tool shed and clean it out.  They took everything!  All the tools, gloves, BBQ, Kettle, Tea, Coffee, Squash, tables, chairs and the Biscuits!

But I will be there this Saturday from 10.30am until 3pm with the front gates open...

Brockley Nature Reserve opens this weekend

This Saturday (9th June) Brockley Nature Reserve (New Cross Gate Cutting) will be open for all to enjoy. The day will run from 12pm until 5pm so come and join the local volunteer group who will be around the nature reserve working on the footpaths to cut back and open up the paths around the nature reserve.

To help out with the volunteer group then please bring with you old clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty, stout footwear, waterproof coat (in case the weather changes) and a pack lunch - tools, gloves, tea, coffee and biscuits provided.

If you are going to be volunteering with the local group then please bring with you an emergency contact with you. Support throughout the day and training on all the tools will be offered by the local group or the volunteer warden.

Wild London at the Brockley Nature Reserve

Wild London is organising an open day at the Brockley Nature Reserve this Saturday, October 8th, from 11am - 3pm.

Helen, from the London Wildlife Trust, has been in touch to let us know about the new, regular opening hours for the Brockley Nature Reserve, Vesta Road.

It's open every second Saturday of the month, between 12pm and 5pm. The Reserve is open to all but tricky to navigate for wheelchair and buggy users, due to the uneven paths.

They're also looking for volunteers to help keep the reserve clean and tidy and keep the paths clear of vegetation. If you're interested, please click here to get in touch via email.

Greenspaces: Brockley Nature Reserve

Just off Vesta Road, running along the railway line between Brockley and New Cross Gate, is a narrow but deceptively large strip of wooded land. Left for years to do as it pleases, it now forms Brockley's very own nature reserve.

Despite there being only really one route round the place, you can still lose yourself once inside. As it's not open on a regular basis, it is completeley undisturbed. There are no surfaced paths, benches, or litter bins here. These photos, taken last year, give you a taste of how tranquil and unspoilt the place is.

Just a quick note to say that the Brockley Nature reserve will be opening to the public again between 2pm and 5pm this Sunday, weather permitting (forecast to be good).

It’s an excellent chance to visit a relatively unknown area of wilderness at the heart of Brockley and it got a lot of positive reviews last time it opened its doors, so definitely worth a visit.
