O happy day: Summer is here, Model Market has returned.

The Lewisham food and booze experience re-opens tomorrow night, and this year's line-up includes What the Fattoush (vegan), Pocho (sliders and tacos) and Mama's Jerk (barbecue).

Opens 5pm Friday and runs every weekend throughout the summer. Go.

Deptford Bites - New Saturday Market Launches April 7

Deptford Market Yard's food market has been a long-time coming but the team has finally announced a new regular Saturday event. They gush:

Deptford Market Yard is excited to announce a new weekly Saturday market ‘Deptford Bites’. Curated by London food event and market organisers Eat Me Drink Me, the weekly market will bring together the best produce and street food traders London has to offer, as well as a selection of craft stalls with a focus on South East London makers & designers.

The market will showcase street food sensations such as the flavour-punching Northern Thai food by KraPow LDN to the sophisticated Oyster Boys who will be serving freshly shucked oysters and made to order Bloody Mary’s from their retro food cart, guaranteed to get you back on your feet after one too many on a Friday night. After spending much of her childhood in Deptford, Zoe Adjonyoh from Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen will also return with her out of this world Ghanaian creations. And finally, for your sweet fix, the market will welcome plant based, dairy free, Black Mylk Ice cream. Its ice cream is handcrafted using a blend of homemade cashew nut milk and coconut milk, with colours and flavours selected from seasonal ingredients – from Honeycomb and Pine nut and Miso Caramel & Pecan to Ceylon Cinnamon & Walnut, you will be spoiled for choice.

‘Deptford Bites’ will feature a mixture of permanent Saturday traders and a rotation of guest vendors. It will be a place to browse and buy artisanal fresh ingredients with everything from bread and cheese to olives and farm produce. And there’ll be a craft and design area where you can pick up unusual gifts, with a focus on makers and designers in the South East London area. The launch day market includes popups from perfumier Maya Njie, prints from Catford Creative and Deptford’s very own Stray East with their gorgeous homewares.

To mark the launch and celebrate the thriving local community, Grace Dent will be curating a series of talks covering subjects such as the changing face of Deptford and the rise of Veganism. Starring household names such as Jay Brave, Zoe Adjonyoh and Grace Dent herself as well as local London voices from the Deptford area including resident Adrian Luckie from Mama’s Jerk and Deptford Esquire’s Saima Arshad.

There will be live music every week and of course an opportunity to re-visit the excellent permanent Deptford Market Yard tenants; it’s the perfect place to grab some food and drink, stock up for the week and browse the craft stores on a sunny Saturday.

Dent & McKenzie launch a new weekly market in Deptford

Grace Dent, critic, author and broadcaster, has joined forces with food-event guru Kate McKenzie to present Deptford Bites Live on Saturday 7th April 2018. This one-day festival of eating & drinking runs from 10pm to 4pm at Deptford Market Yard.

The event will mark the start of a new weekly market in the Yard.

On the 7th, Grace Dent will curate and host a series of talks which picks apart Deptford’s new status as ‘up and coming’ - including debates about gentrification, veganism and diversity in the restaurant industry. Still, the food should be good.

Catford Food Market opens March 25

A new monthly Council-backed street food market starts in Catford on March 25. The Catford Food Market team writes:

The Market, which kicks off on Sunday 25 March from 10am–4pm, will take place on the last Sunday of every month.

By implementing recommendations submitted at catfordtowncentre.commonplace.is – the online engagement platform collecting people’s aspirations for the town centre – Catford Food Market aims to create real opportunities to develop and sustain new businesses, that complements the existing offer and meets local people needs.

International flavours offered by local traders include Caribbean fayre from Jerk Off BBQ, north east Indian delights from Raastawala, Japanese delicacies from Fuse Love and Italian inspired sourdough pizza from Van Dough.  There’ll also be cakes from Brett & Bailey and Miss Flits Vegan Bakes, and bread and pastries from Claude’s Boulangerie. Non-food treats include multicultural children’s books from This is Book Love and work by local Catford artists and designers including Hazel Nicholls.

You can also get your hands on Catford’s newest custom beverages including: Catford Cream Soda and Catford Cola as well as Tom Cat Six gin and Catford Pride pale ale, both of which launched popular drinks festivals last year.

The Brockley Christmas Market, December 9, 2017

The Brockley Christmas Market will be the biggest ever. The full quota of 65 stalls is now taken, Santa and the Christmas Fairy are booked and the playlist has been chosen. All that remains is for you all to come.

The Brockley Christmas Market 2017

Last month, I ran into one of the members of the Brockley Cross Action Group, who had moved away from the area, realised the terrible mistake he'd made, and moved back. He was busy weeding and trimming the plants in the Brockley Station garden, which the group created.

The garden and the wider Coulgate Street masterplan they championed helped to unlock the wider improvements around the east side of the station and have produced the town centre that this part of Brockley had always lacked.

This group - along with many others like it - form the vibrant civil society that has shaped Brockley's development over the last decade. We are lucky to have them. Soon, they will be going on a recruitment drive for new members, but for now, they want you to know about the Christmas Market they will be holding in December. Rupert writes:

"The Brockley Cross Action Group is once again organising the Brockley Community Christmas Market, which this year will be held on Saturday 9th December from 12pm (in Coulgate Street by Brockley Station).

"As in previous years we intend to have up to 60 stalls along the street selling a wide range of arts & crafts items, festive gifts and food. There will be festive activities and live music all afternoon.

"We are looking for local volunteers to help set up and run the market on the day! Tasks include setting up the market in the morning, putting the stall lights up, looking after the stallholders, running the BXAG mulled wine stall (to raise money for community activities) and tidying up at the end of the day.

Model Market IV - Begins April 28

Model Market [196 Lewisham High Street] is back for more. It's hard to conceive a South East London summer without it. London Union says:

Model Market, our late and local Lewisham feast, is returning to it’s SE13 home on Friday 28 April for the fourth year running. We’ll be launching with a three-day-strong Bank Holiday Weekender across Fri/Sat/Sun and running ALL summer long with ten street food heroes and five brilliant bars.

Our two newest additions are Nanban and Tacos del Rey (a brand new taco concept from the team behind Killa Dilla).

Every Friday and Saturday, 5pm - 1am. Also open on Sunday during opening weekend. Entry is free before 7pm, £3 thereafter.

Brockley Christmas Market, December 17

The Brockley Christmas Market will return to Coulgate Street on Saturday, December 17th from 12pm-6pm.

Organised by the Brockley Cross Action Group, it will be the 10th annual event and the first since the street's makeover.

The cost of a stall is £60 and you can email brockleycrossactiongroup@gmail.com for an application form. The closing date for applications is November 17th The organisers are also looking for local musicians and performers who want to get involved, so drop them a line if you're interested.

The John Stainer Christmas Market, December 10

This year John Stainer School will be running a Community Christmas Market, where we hope to showcase all the arts, crafts and wares that local artists and businesses have to offer.

There will be everything from mince pies and hot chocolate to Christmas carols and a Santa's Grotto.

SoLo Craft Fair, December 10

The SoLo Craft Fair has already taken place across eight different locations and involved 150 creative traders. Now it's coming to Deptford.

It's an event designed to showcase all elements of creativity, an event which really has something for everyone no matter your age or interests.

With five events planned across South London pubs, shoppers will be able to meet all their Christmas needs, and take part in workshops such as a free ‘stitch and b*tch’ session, an ‘unlucky portrait dip’ with The London Drawing Group and a 'make your own terrarium session' with Make Good.

The upcoming markets include a Winter Wonderland  on December 10th at Buster Mantis, 11-5pm.

Brockley Market's 5th Birthday, September 24th

Brockley Market turns five on Saturday 24th September and expects to welcome its 500,000th visitor on the day.

The market is a genuine local institution, which was created because local photographer Toby Allen thought Lewisham College's car park was a wasted asset at weekends. A doubtful Council gave it their blessing and residents thronged from day one, thanks to a carefully balanced mix of street food and produce and an atmosphere that encourages both community and explorers. Today, the market has over 40 food stalls.

The weekend's celebrations will include 5th birthday cake and treats from Kooky Bakes, live music from Balkan folk collective Benny and ‘The Cheese Grinder’, plus the first lucky 50 will get a goody bag.

The European Capital of Vibes

To celebrate its longer daytime opening hours, Lewisham street food phenomenon Model Market has created a new muralpaying tribute to the official European Capital of Vibes. They say:

Inspired by similar murals in Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon, we wanted to produce an artwork that captures the unique atmosphere of our favourite little bit of south east London.

We collaborated with Bread Collective, a network of artists and creatives, to create a mural featuring Lewisham’s local landmarks, including the Horniman Museum, Rivoli Ballroom, Lewisham Clock Tower, Goldsmiths University, the DLR and - of course - the 436 bus. Take advantage of our new daytime hours by bringing the whole family down on Saturdays. Soak up the sun and dig into our delicious street food.

Now celebrating our third year at Model Market, we’re proud to welcome over 4,000 people from the area every weekend. Doors open every Friday from 5pm till 1am and every Saturday from Midday till 1am.

Introducing SoLo Craft Fair - a makers market showcasing some of the best local creative talent in makers and creators.

SoLo Craft Fair will be debuting their first event at the iconic Catford Constitutional Club in South East London on Saturday 30th April 2016.

We have searched long and hard for some of the best small businesses in South London. We'll have stalls ranging from art prints, jewellery, handmade notebooks to vintage fashion to Bowie broaches!

This is a market with a difference as well as our creative stall holders we will be giving our guests the opportunity to pamper themselves with our mini manicurists and masseuses. There will also jewellery making and printing workshops for those who are feeling creative.

Folks singers to Irish bands will be performing throughout the day, so guests are encouraged to buy a drink and the bar and enjoy all the musical talent whilst browsing our stalls.

Model Market returns for 2016

Model Market, the indoor/outdoor night market from Street Feast is back in its Lewisham home, launching Fri/Sat 15/16 April and running all summer long. Head down to SE13 for 10 fantastic micro-diners, five brilliant bars and a world-beating night out.

Alongside Lewisham locals SE Cakery, Mama’s Jerk and Mother Flipper some of our favourite traders return to the line-up including Club Mexicana, Rola Wala, Up In My Grilland Yum Bun.  Plus, three new traders make the move south east with HotBox, Sub Cult and You Doughnut joining the party.Work your way around and eat the world without leaving Zone 2.

We’ve got your sunshine drinking sorted. Take a bar safari around our five watering holes - start with a giant festival-sized cocktail at Rotary Bar, grab an Uber Melon at the Rum Shack to enjoy on the Lewisham Beach, shimmy to the Slushy Bar for a Tequila Colada, and soak up the sun on the Lewisham High Line with an icy-cold beer. Finish at Winyl for breaks, grapes and grooves until 1am.

Indoor market and small cinema planned for Ladywell development

Pop-up development PLACE / Ladywell has an irritating name and would be better as a permanent structure rather than messing around as a temporary building, but by God, the team behind it know how to give the people what they want - and are planning an indoor market and small cinema on site. They say:

We will manage the Ground floor as affordable mixed-use spaces with a focus on making and selling.

We will also be creating opportunities for an indoor market for start up retail, some independent retail units, a community café and maker spaces. A long consultation period uncovered a strong desire within the local community for a cinema / screening space of some sort.

The space will come with a basic fit out to allow for this but it is expected that adaptations may need to be made by the eventual operator of the space. We would like any interested parties to get in contact with us for further discussions on what may be possible within the space available.

There will be around 50 square metres of space allocated from May 2016 – 2019, with possible extension of up to 5 years on the same site. The space may also come partially furnished depending on budget. Lease terms are negotiable. The building will be brand new and tenants will benefit from being able to have early influence in the way the spaces are set up and managed to creative create a strong supportive community of space users.

Brockley Xmas Market 2015

We are pleased to present the ninth Brockley Christmas Market, this coming Saturday 12th December, 12.00 - 6.00pm! As usual the Market will be located in Coulgate Street, from Brockley Road to Foxberry Road, outside Brockley Station. The road will be closed to vehicles for the day.

This year will be out biggest market ever! We have 70 stalls selling mainly bespoke arts & crafts and festive items, along with a mix of food stalls. BXAG will as always have their own stall selling mulled wine, mince pies and sausage rolls. The market offers a huge range of high quality wares and is a great place to do some Xmas shopping!

We have six hours of live music and carol singing, with a packed line up of local talent to entertain you all day long! The music is being organised again this year by the excellent School of Rock!

There will be an Xmas tree lighting ceremony for the kids at approx. 4.30, up on the Common! This year we have for the first time planted a proper living tree, which in time will grow into a fine specimen that can be used for years to come. The tree was kindly funded by the Brockley Assembly.

If you have parked a car on Coulgate Street please help us to clear the street by removing it on Friday evening. We close the street to traffic on Friday evening from 7.00pm.
