Shipwrecked at the Brockley Jack

Shipwrecked! An entertainment - the Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont  (as told by himself)
by Donald Margulies

Tuesday 9 December to Sunday 4 January
Press Night: Thursday 11 December at 7.45pm

Louis de Rougemont took Victorian England by storm with his tales of adventure on the high seas.  It was a story of bravery, survival and celebrity that left his readers spellbound.  Embarking on an epic journey, Louis encounters extraordinary creatures and strange islands, overcomes storms, shipwreck and attacks by a native tribe and a man-eating octopus, only to return to London thirty years later to publish his exploits.

Shipwrecked is a story that captivated and divided nineteenth century society.  Is Louis de Rougemont an adventurer capable of amazing deeds, or is he merely a teller of tall tales?

The Jack Studio presents the UK Premiere of Shipwrecked! An Entertainment... written by Pulitzer Prize winning dramatist Donald Margulies. Produced by the same team behind The Mystery of Irma Vep (nominated for five Off West End Awards, including best director and best production), Ghost Train, Around the World in 80 Days and Sleepy Hollow.

Faust meets Baseball in this classic Broadway musical. As middle-aged baseball fan Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil in order to help his favourite baseball team beat the New York Yankees, hell literally breaks loose. Transformed into baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he takes the Washington Senators to new heights whilst discovering the true worth of the life he was so quick to leave behind.

From song writing duo Adler and Ross (the team behind ‘The Pajama Game’) this memorable score features ‘Whatever Lola Wants’, ‘Shoeless Joe’, ‘Who’s Got the Pain?’ and ‘Heart’. This Tony Award winning musical is brought to the London fringe in an exciting new form by Imperial Productions.

Playwriting classes at the Brockley Jack

The Brockley Jack team writes:

Ever wanted to write a successful vehicle for yourself or an actor to play but didn't know where to start? This workshop gives you the tools to create and find the essence of your stage persona, alongside exploring different approaches of how best to tell your story on stage. (14 participants max)

Writing for One This is a practical workshop for the writer to gain experience and confidence in standing up in front of an audience. It will be led by the Brockley Jack's literary manager and playwright, David Bottomley, who developed and performed his own one man show, Message In A Bottle at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012.

The Jack Writers’ Workshop consists of seven two-hour workshop sessions. The course takes place over four months to allow time for writers to continue developing and rewriting material in between sessions. At the end of the course you should aim to realise a polished ten minute piece for performance.

The course will culminate with a selection of the strongest pieces being performed in front of a ticketed audience at the Jack Studio in early Spring 2014. The cost of the full workshop is £95 which is payable in advance.

Please send an email to writers@brockleyjack.co.uk with your name, contact details and short writing CV, if applicable, to receive details of how to make payment for the course. Workshops take place on various Monday evenings at 7.30pm-9.30pm at the Brockley Jack Studio Theatre. This workshop is open to writers of all experiences.

The Ghost Train at The Brockley Jack Theatre

The Brockley Jack Theatre team write:

The Christmas show at The Brockley Jack Studio Theatre has become a bit of a tradition and a favourite alternative to the usual panto offering. This year is no exception with the presentation of The Ghost Train by Arnold Ridley, and directed by the Jack's artistic director Kate Bannister.

Ridley was an actor and a playwright, best known for playing Private Godfrey in 'Dad's Army'. He wrote The Ghost Train in 1923 and it became a West End hit in 1925.

When the emergency cord is pulled, six travellers become stranded overnight in the waiting room of a lonely railway junction. The stationmaster tells a tale of a ghost train that haunts the line and brings death to those that look upon it. Unable to leave, the passengers must confront their fears whilst they await the arrival of the phantom midnight express.

Some performances are close to selling out, so we advise early booking for this Christmas treat!

Tickets can be booked via the website: www.brockleyjack.co.uk

I'd like to offer a £5 ticket for BC readers when they quote 'Brockley Blog' on the door tonight and tomorrow

For tonight at 7.45pm
DOUBLE BILL
Chris McCausland. Nominated Best New Show at Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival, Chris examines his own attitude towards comedy and life, his natural aversion to box ticking and unleashes a hysterical no-holds barred attack on the unthinkable!  A must-see! (Sunday Times)
Liam Mullone returns with this taboo-bending romp through intolerance, racism, fascism, and the man from Defra who tried to confiscate his stuffed toys because they were 'full of alien species'. A cult in the making (Time Out )*****

And tomorrow at 7.45pm
DOUBLE BILL
Laurence Clark
Laurence Clark returns to the Jack following last year's sell-out show. Expect absurd logic, death-defying stunts and unusual varieties of crisps... just don't expect to come away ‘inspired'! Star of BBC1's We Won't Drop The Baby.
Inspired has been commissioned by the Unlimited programme, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad
Erich McElroy
American Erich McElroy is more British than you. Not surprising really, he had to revise for it, swear an oath and learn all the verses of the national anthem. But is that enough? Come and share this hour of comedy about discovering what it takes to become British. Great gags (The Stage)

Edinburgh previews at the Brockley Jack

The Brockley Jack Theatre team writes:

From this Friday we are pleased to be hosting a variety of Edinburgh Festival previews, from one man shows to comedy double bills. Each event is on for one night only so catch them at The Jack before they take Edinburgh by storm!

Visit our website for full details and to book your tickets now.

In August we are pleased to present Bookends: Shakespeare's first and last plays performed in rep by critically acclaimed theatre company Perfect Shadow Mingled Yarn.

Before the comedies there were Two Gentlemen of Verona. After the tragedies there were Two Noble Kinsmen. Together two fairytales unfold, two different examinations of love: one light, one dark, one young, one old, one comic, one tragic. Together they explore how much love changes across Shakespeare's career – and how much it stays the same.

To celebrate life as a social business, they are offering discount tickets for their current production Summer by Julia Stubbs Hughes, based on the novel by Edith Wharton (1862-1937).

This premiere will coincide with those celebrations, showing that Wharton is now considered by many as an iconic writer for the 21st century. Tickets are £8 plus booking fee.

The SE4 Book Club moves to the Brockley Jack

Yvonne, who runs the SE4 Book Club, writes: Our new location is the Brockley Jack pub and we now meet every 2nd Monday of the month, with the next one on February 13th.

We had 12 people at our first session and 15 at out second. Roughly a third of those attending learned about it via Brockley Central, so BCers will be in good company. Our next book, (as suggested by one of our members) is Stephen R. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.
