Brockley Social Club's retro stylings might be better suited to a screening of Rita, Sue and Bob Too, but Hatty is giving it a Footloose makeover. She writes:

We are screening the brilliant dance movie, Footloose, followed by an 80's disco featuring all of your favourite 80's pop tunes.

Join us at The Brockley Social Club on Saturday 8th July - please do dress up in 80s gear if you like - as an incentive, we will award prizes to the best dressed!

For early birds who arrive between 7.30 and 8.00 on the night, we will have Pop Up Make Up and Hair Crimping in the snug (for a 'pay what you like' donation). Guaranteed 80's look in minutes. Ellnet, rollers and peach eye shadow included!

After the film, we bring you the very best of the 80's. Enjoy the tunes you can't believe you still know the words to. Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, A-ha, Japan, Yazoo, we aim to play something for (almost) everyone.  Power ballads also available!

Number82 film club, July 16th

number82 is a locally-based organisation that exists to support creative entrepreneurs and communities and every now and then it throws a film night at the Brockley Social Club (240 Brockley Road). The next film club night is 16th July, from 7.30pm until 11pm. Bingo at 8.15pm / Films from 8.45pm. £3 entry fee. This time around, the films are:

- Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001, Directed by Stacy Peralta)
Using a mix of film of the Zephyr skateboard team shot in the 1970's by Craig Stecyk and more recent interviews, this documentary tells the story of a radical group of teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding culture.

- Uncommon Ideals (Directed by Chris Mclean)
Stories from the North Sea. From the fjords to lochs. From brown to blue. Surfing's sepia dipped North Sea tales foretold... Uncommon Ideals is part of a larger project called the Chronicles of Doggerland, a fascinating series of film work to document North Sea surfing. This short film is an exhilirating example of the sport in all it's extreme beauty and drama.

Number 82 Film Club, February 26th

Number82 Film Club is hosting a night at the Brockley Social Club (240 Brockley Road), screening Bronco Bullfrog and Local Life on Feb 26th, from 7.30pm - 11pm. They say:

Bronco Bullfrog is a tale of teenage love and alienantion, the film plays out against the cafes, bombsites and the new brutalist architecture and high rise flats in Stratford, East London. With a cast made up of young people from the streets, it offers a snapshot of late 1960's working class life.

Local Life  is a short film sponsored by the Brewers Society, it just points the camera at various people enjoying various pubs! The incredible thing about this film is the editing and sound effects, quite amazing.. its a form of public information film about the joy of pubs.

Tickets £3. Bingo at 8pm.

Charity fundraiser at the Brockley Social Club, July 22nd

In August, my girlfriend Emma is doing the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Stroke Association and Parkinsons UK.

We are holding a fundraiser at the Brockley Social Club on Friday July 22nd to raise money for the Charities. There is no cover charge for people to come along but we do hope that we can get them to dig deep(ish) on the night.

We are lining up Comedians to perform on the Night and will be having a live band and a raffle.

We have a webpage set up which has all the information of the night and the charities.

We're also looking for a local band who might be interested in performing on the night, so if any BC readers are in a band and want to take part, please get in touch.

Dame Sybil Phoenix documentary, tonight 8pm

Dame Sybil Pheonix

As part of this year's Brockley MAX, the Brockley Social Club will stage a screening of 'Loving Hands', a film about the life and work of Brockley resident Dame Sybil Phoenix. The screening will include a Q&A with director Lucia Tambini. The event is free and the Social Club bar will be open.

Lucia explains the important part Pheonix has played in Lewisham's post-War history:

"Sybil Phoenix, through her unwavering faith in others, dedication and activism has managed to transform thousands of lives for the better. As a foster mother, founder of Britains first black youth club and through her work on community relations over the past fifty years Sybil has had a lasting impact in Lewisham and beyond."

The Brockley Rotary Club

Did you know Brockley has a Rotary Club? Well we have and have done since 1924.

As we learned at the Brockley Assembly, it meets at the Brockley Social Club every Wednesday at 1pm. As well as meeting for lunch and entertainment, they've recently organised day trips to Lingfield Races and Hastings.

They're always looking for new members so please pop in on Wednesday or email Peter.

The Brockley Society are looking for people to help out at their Winter Party for Senior Citizens. It takes place on the 31st January at the Brockley Social Club.
