For sale: The Rivoli Ballroom

Yours for a cool £10 million, the Rivoli Ballroom has gone up for sale. There's no doubt that the Rivoli has untapped potential as a unique and characterful venue (with a 24-hour drinking license), which a new owner might capitalise on. On the other hand, it's also vulnerable to developments that could compromise its 1930s splendour.

Thanks to Darren for letting us know, we hope to bring you more detail on the story in the coming days.

Now where did I put my purse?
Seriously, I hope who ever buys it is more amenable than the present owners - it was the reason why it I didn't hire it for the closing night of Brockley Max.
£10 million is a lot to recoup even as a regular film location.

It'll probably become a Tesco!

However, I'm hoping someone will put it to a more community-friendly use; With the Picturehouse in Greenwich upping its prices and mainstreaming its films, a cinema-cum-contemporary arts centre would be most welcome.

I think this is potentially bad news for anyone who lives down that end.
Who can afford to buy it at 10 million and then keep it as a going concern? Is it listed? Because if not my money is that it will be razed to the ground and become flats. And that's one of the better options - imagine if it becomes some grotty nightclub.

Couldn't Hugh buy it? Although I suppose he might turn it into an indoor dressage arena...

Opposite Crofton Park with the East London Line coming. It's gonna be flats surely?

Lewisham would know if it's listed, I'd be surprised if it isn't

It's not listed and apart from it's interior, it's a in a pretty bad way. Can't imagine the Council are likely to object to a Rivoli Mansions application although it would be thoroughly uninspired.

We're negotiating buying Wickham Road, numbers 13-40, and knocking them into a single residence to bring out their 'potential for a wonderful family home'.

The capital employed puts the Ravioli beyond reach for the moment.

Just make sure that when your lady starts squeezing out little lawyers they don't come a 'tick & treating' down Malpas Road...!!

I can't imagine anyone would open a nightclub there if it will cost £10 million just to buy the site. It would have to be one hell of night club to recoup that sort of an outlay.

What is the interior like (anyone got any images they could post?). I heard Sydenham recently got the Greyhound Pub listed which was going to be demolished. Perhaps there is a chance to influnce the outcome of the Rivoli.

This is a jewel of a place and even the thought that it could become flats or a mundane night club is heart rending.

There are pictures of it here: http://www.therivoli.co.uk/
and

and a few pictures I took at a 2006 event:

I know this wasn't the intention of the early posters, but I just wanted to try to counter any impression those who don't know the place might have got that the place is closing because it wasn't successful or viable.

This is a situation where someone is retiring from a labour of love.
The ballroom served a huge community of fans, whether ballroom, jive, salsa fans or those going to unusual and innovative club nights, as well as big band concerts, Stop the War meetings, one off events like the White Stripes gig, dance lessons and private parties.

You will, in fact, have seen it because it has featured as a setting in so many films, TV programmes, pop videos and ads.

But the exterior belies its charm -go and see it for yourself. Even my more cynical friends have been enchanted.
There are a lot of events posted on its doors at present - maybe not for much longer.

Thank you Brockley Central for raising this - now to think what to do.... after all is only £10 million pounds...

Wasn't the Catford dog track listed? Oh.

How about possing for nude 'Brockley Central' calendar? It worked for the Womens Institute. Augustine could pose with a strateically placed baguette.

Everybody from Elton John to S-Club 7 has used the Rivoli for video shoots:

I don't share people's worries about it being a nightclub - I think it would be a crime for it to be used for anything other than dancing, it's a ballroom after all. I had some great nights there when Club Montepulciano was on.

It isn't that I am worried about it being a nightclub, as that is what it is at present. I think I used the words 'mundane nightclub', because I can see someone trying to modernise it in an an attempt to make it more appealing. What is good about it at present, is that you get such a wide range of ages using it - if it tries to be more obviously commercial it could shift the balance.

London Tonight will have a short segment on the Rivoli tonight (December 12th), filmed last night.

Thanks everyone for the updates.
Let's keep this going! Rivoli must be saved (but lets hope it finds a wonderful new owner and is not in any danger)

There seem to be a number of threads on the Rivoli on this blog. I've posted on the other one that it has been listed by English Heritage now so hopefully that means whoever buys it can't turn it into a sainsburys. not sure if that filtered across the threads...
