Turn Brockley's phone boxes into something amazing

Mel writes:

Under British Telecoms Adopt a Kiosk scheme two listed telephone boxes in Brockley (on the corners of Lewisham Way and Wickham Rd and Lewisham Way and Breakspears Rd.) have been saved and are now free to be used by us all. This is only the start as there are more that could be rescued.

These are the first, and only, boxes in London to now be owned by the community. But what would you like them to be used for?

A library, toy exchange, WiFi hub, seedling greenhouse, herb box or art space? Or all of the above, free to be booked by everyone via an online diary?

Come to the first meeting of the Brockley Box Collective on 27 March 2013 at 7pm at The Tea Factory, Room 104, Endwell Road. With thanks to Green Tea Architects.

Is it possible to also save the telephone box on the corner of St Margarets Road (oustide Sids) This has also fallen into disrepair, has many glass panes missing!

The one that's really bad on Lewisham way near the corner of Tyrwhitt Road, breaks my heart.

Hi I saw the signs you put in the phone boxes, I think it's a great idea to have a book and toy exchange, if you like I could make some shelves to go inside that wouldn't have any fixings going into the phone boxes themselves, there could be a lower shelf for toys and a higher shelf for books? If you want I'm happy to design and make one to see how it goes? If you are interested feel free to email me on sebastian-james@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks

I'm all for saving these but how are they going to be maintained in future and how're we going to prevent vandalism of the boxes and their contents? Much as a little street library sounds lovely, I can imagine it being set alight quite quickly by some local yob...

I'd love to see a little greenhouse, and small plants are fairly hard to set alight. Not sure there's much sun to either of those locations though...

Why do they have to be cosy things? Why not something honest?

You have a valid point, but does that mean those involved give up before they've started, or go ahead with the realistic expectation that there may be vandalism and be ready to redo/repair as needed? We may be pleasantly surprised.

Agree, if you work on the basis that everything is crap and people will smash up anything nice you do, you wouldn't do anything. We heard the same arguments against planting the common by the station, but it's generally respected.

This is not to say the designs / concepts shouldn't be pragmatic and anticipate such problems, but let's not build our world around the lowest common denominator.

A cash machine in the one near St John's station would be nice!

Paint it blue like a time machine, everytime somoene goes past it should say a phrase from Doctor Who series. it should also have photobooth inside for people to freely go in and take a picture which will go onto the brockley soc website picture gallery as record of the population who walked by striking a pose or voguing!

Good idea Roy. Though sadly the Broc Soc website is still under construction - and no picture gallery to put them up. Maybe soon!

It should also have lots of nobs and bits making noise whizz and steam inside for kids to play.. something low maintenance and quirky fun rather than a green house for plants. It could be given to Goldsmith as arts project to see what they can come up with!

I volunteer to do the work and upkeep on the really beaten up one opposite aladins cave, I will fix the windows , paint it all different colours and put book shelves in it and make sure it's always stocked with books. But do I need a bit of paper or something to give me permission ? I don't want to get busted for vandalism. Also I think I know the real identity of Roy Savage! I may out him. HA!
