Lock Tavern buys the Amersham Arms

Friend of Brockley Central, Luke, has emailed this news about the Amersham Arms in New Cross.

The Amersham Arms has been bought by the Lock Tavern (uber cool/trendyvenue in Camden). My mate works in the record industry and got a news update a few days ago.

"Now in the hands of the group who own the Lock Tavern, Defectors Weld and Keston Lodge, the Amersham Arms is due for a sprucing up over thesummer. Known for its rock, country, jazz and ska nights, we hope a similarly eclectic music policy will still be on offer come the autumn."

The Amersham is already one of the best pubs in the area, but the new owners can probably be relied upon to retain its character while adding a new and improved music line-up.

Now, if only the Venue can be rescued from death-by-tribute acts and restored to its former goth glory, New Cross will get its groove back.

Oooh. The Lock's a bit poncy for down-at-heel New Cross, isn't it? Don't tell me that Sadie Frost et al will shortly be moving into the area ...

Yes, I had heard rumours of this a while back, and then completely forgot about it! The Amersham is already a great venue, as you say, and when it closed a lot of people were fearful for its future, but I think this is great news.

The Lock Tavern always have great bleeding edge band line-ups, plus a lot of their nights are free. They also do good grub. The group also own a number of similar successful venues around the country - crucially each with its own identity, rather than the copy & paste technique of other bars.

All in all, I can't wait to have the Amersham back but suitably refreshed! I just hope they keep the name.

Hooray! I was so sad to see the Amersham close. But hopefully this will breathe new life into an already fantastic local!

Crikey. I know the Defectors Weld fairly well - it's a good pub but a bit Nathan Barley-esque. I think the days of the old Amersham Arms are well and truly gone!

Hi guys,

The rumours are true, we are taking over the Amersham Arms from October onwards. Don't worry, we're not turning it into anythin we have done before. We're sprucing up the features of this great venue, introducing a permanent art gallery upstairs and working with existing Amersham and New Cross promoters as well as many others to hopefully provide a very exciting musical programme for South London. We love what New Cross already had going for it, which is why we're so happy to make this move.

Sounds fantastic, thanks for replying Casper. The art gallery should work really well. Will it still be called The Amersham!? :)

I know someone that's DJing there at some point for thbe adventures in the beetroot field mob so it should be rocking as his own night at the lock in camden is banged out and rammel every time

Yes indeed, it will still be called The Amersham Arms... And familiar faces, such as the Catapult Club, will still be doing what they do!

Walked past this at the weekend, and there is a fair old amount of work going on, as well as a lengthy list of future entertainment.

Opening night will involve a DJ set from no less that hot Chip...

It’s not Brockley but near enough to my end of it so I’m happy.…..

The Amersham Arms is re-opening this week. Actually as I’m pushing 40 and like nothing more than relaxing in front of the Antiques Roadshow with a nice cup of coco I suspect I’m not in their target audience. Having said that it looks like fun, it’s kept its music credentials but had a bit of Camden sprinkled over – not too much I hope. Link…

…and it does decent looking food. Not seen any sundried tomatoes, rocket or even the smallest shaving of parmesan but it is just pretentious enough to annoy those who think ‘real’ boozers should only have a microwave in the kitchen.

Even if you don’t want to go at least it’s a place where the uber cool students in skinny jeans, trilbies and smoking roll ups can be corralled, leaving the sticky carpeted joints for everyone else.

Will also have an art gallery, on balance it looks like a winner.
