Brockley Bites

Q Magazine pays tribute to Brockley legend
Not Kate Bush, Athlete or Aqualung, but Erin, from the Launderette on Brockley Road. Apparently, someone from Q is a regular customer and interviewed her about her favourite song to work to. She plumped for Rod Stewart's Maggie May. Apparently, in her youth, "she was more like Rod than Rod."

Sounds Around remains defiant
The scaffolding up on Sounds Around had prompted some speculation that it was finally submitting to modernity and getting a face lift. But rest assured, it's going to stay as lovably anachronistic as ever - they're just fixing a leaky roof.

Brockley "the new East Dulwich" say East Dulwichers
In an echo of the debate we're currently having on Brockley Central, The East Dulwich forum is fretting over whether their area has lost its charm and are casting around for the "New East Dulwich", with Brockley one of the leading contenders, noted for its local pride and proximity to "edgy" areas like New Cross.

Ah – Erin – that’s her name. I use that laundrette every weekend and my 3 year old son loves collecting his service wash ticket from her. We know her as “lady” as in my son says “Hello, lady”, “Here’s the ticket, lady” and “Goodbye, lady”. I think Erin get a kick out of it. :-D

When I first used the laundrette I was convinced “East Enders” had based Dot Cotton on her. Once we had been going there for six months she started to warm up a little but she was a hard nut to crack.

She definitely is a Brockley institution.

(Nick - can you post a link to the article? I’d love to read it)

I couldn't find it online, but it's pinned up with pride in the shop. It's not the biggest piece in the world, by the way...

I see Hugh has found a whole new local populace to antagonise on the Dulwich forum...

Hmm, Edgy New cross...does anyone actualy like new cross? Is there anything there for anyone who isn't a student? I'd rather not be anywhere near it. East Dulwich has dramatically changed, Brockley will never be like that, it's higstreet is too fragmented with large gaps between parades. Brockley has some of it's own charms which no doubt will improve over time, but its a very slow process. Al places change anyway, in the future brockley may decline again.

Glad local characters like Erin are getting recognition...people like that make a difference.

There was an article in Time Out a few months back describing New Cross as akin to the South Bank in Paris or Haight Ashbury in the 60s.
I make no comment on that! I am not crazy about New Cross but suspect this is partly because it is "off my patch" and the bits I know are on or around a very busy road. I did notice quite a few new shops and cafes that looked interesting had opened up the far side of New Cross.

New Cross suffers through no fault of its own; it's that hellish one-way system and the constant traffic that damns it to the position of eternal thoroughfare. No fun either for pedestrians or motorists.

New Cross is hellish because it looks rundown, it's train station is a dump, it has people hanging around, is dirty and has no shops of any value whatsoever. Apart from on eor two architectural gems, it's ugly too. It's not the traffics fault, the histraat is the fault of the people who set up the shops, live and drop litter there.

Im a bit upset about the last two of these comments about New Cross - how can you say that it is ugly and dirty thanks to the people who live there?! Please, I live there and love it. It is comments and attitudes like that that that perpetuate the myths about the area.

It's Sunday morning, I'm not fully awake yet - hence not spotting for several minutes that this is a 2007 thread, and so is the ED thread it links to. Back to sleep now.
