Yo Mo Pho!

Long Time Cafe (Coulgate Street) was once the best-named Brockley business, but it's now long gone, replaced with an even better-named venue: Mo Pho.

Whereas Long Time served a fusion menu, Mo Pho will be a specialist Veitnamese restaurant. BC reckons this is a smart move since the small kitchen limits the range of dishes that it can serve. With a new focus, it can do one thing really well. And Vietnamese food is worth doing well.

Mo Pho opens later this month.

Wow, this is exciting, I hope you will keep us non-frequent train using types posted as to when it opens and what is good to eat there, so I don't forget about it. Thank you!

let's hope it's better than the food in there the last few months. I've tried it twice (have to let the immune system get a break from city noodles occasionally) and the food was absolutely vile both times.

@Ian on the Hill - oh no! Can you reveal what's good to eat at City Noodles then? I think I need to start discovering Brockley takeaway options. Also, have you eaten at the place next door to Mo Pho? If so, any tips? Thank you!

That place has been through so many changes over the past few years.

When it was Long Time it seemed to hit the perfect spot as takeaway and very small restaurant. The quality was very good had that fusion menu which was highly regarded (though the order taking could be easily confused.)

But in the last couple of years, I don't know what happened.

I hope, in its latest incarnation, they have recaptured the old magic.

I hope it does the pho well so I don't have to trek to Surrey Quays' Cafe East instead!

It seems to happen with a lot of restaurants, they build up a good clientele then change the chef.

Not another Asian food joint!

Had tea in the Brockley Mess on Sunday afternoon - pretty unpleasant experience - it was hot, and smelt strongly of cooking fat, the acoustics are dreadful - a mixture of music, (one or two) children, general chit-chat and the staff rattling cutlery around (not that any of these is ordinarily a bad thing) combined to produce a kind of 'white noise' which we found a little disconcerting and made normal-level conversation difficult. The staff, having to work in these conditions, looked a bit flustered - even with only a handful of people using the premises.

Long time was lovely. I don't think they changed the chef but the menu went a bit all over the place. But they've always made a brilliant pho, so I'm pleased they're honing their menu and just sticking to Vietnamese food. Hope the interior is made nice and cosy again. It used to have a great atmosphere in there about four or five years ago.

@Anon 11.01. Not been for a few weeks, but my experience of Brockley Mess has been great generally. There's an outside bit at the back, you know, not that it's exactly a garden of Eden.

Do they serve good, honest, hearty fare? Or dishonest, artisan fare?

Intriguing. And a great name! Will keep an eye on it and try to post a review as soon as it's open.

As for take-aways in general I've been ordering curries from Zaffron in Forest Hill of late. I don't think their website is up and running yet but you can order via Hungry Horse: http://hungryhouse.co.uk/zaffron

Highly recommended.

Long Time was truly a special place to eat! They did lose their chef, about 3 years ago, he moved to East London. The other guy that ran it with him, think his name was Tuan, did ok for a bit but then the menus went snazzy and the quality was never as good. I really hope it's back to its old standard and stays around this time.

Same, I popped in a few weeks back for the first time in ages and the food was very average. Used to be a good little place, their pork belly thing was a fav and the guys running it were great.

Panda Panda in Deptford is a good model for authetic (so I'm told by people in the know) food of the region

SoniaB said...

I agree. Panda Panda is great. Clean, cheap food.
Anon @ 09:29, I never tried the carribean place next to Mo Pho, but I have tried the other carribean take away opposite Tickle me, and every time, the food was great. Food ordering is not great, as they are not very organised, but worth the wait.

Anyone tried the restaurant fomerly known as Saigon Blues recently?

Not sure what its name is now.

.....also shows that a shutter needn't be an eye sore.

Thanks SoniaB, I should try them. Although Rhythms is two minutes from my house and I've still never tried their food either. Wow, there really is a LOT of takeaway food in Brockley.

I miss Long Time Cafe, the thai green curry with sticky rice was evening saver many a time.

Best Vietnamese I've had localish is Westlake in Deptford High St. On a par with the best Kingsland Road ones, I'd say. Not been there for ages though as they don't do delivery and I'm not very close.

Long Time had seriously declined in quality in recent times. To be honest, I'd completely stopped going in the last year or so. The food was greasy, bland and totally unpredictable. I also don't know why they did that bizarre makeover a few months back. They took away the cosy seating and hid away the kitchen, so the whole place felt awkward and a bit grim.

I really hope Mo Pho raises the bar. Vietnamese food is an absolute favourite of mine and we need more variety in the area.

@anonymous I go to the place next door a lot. I'm obsessed with their jerk chicken dinner! If you need comfort food, that's the place to go. It's filling delicious, real home style cooking.

I enjoyed many nights at Longtime Time cafe and many takeaways too. I was really sad when it closed for many months, but was even more disappointed when it reopened and the good food, atmosphere and staff were all gone!

Not sure if Tom (English name i guess) still runs it but look forward to opening night.

I love the name. Long Time was a good name too but this is a cracker.

Like others have said, Long Time was at its best 3 to 4 years ago so I hope they bring back the great food and friendly eat in experience they had back then. We used to love grabbing a few cans from the off license opposite the turf accountant and sitting on those tiny dinning sets tucking into pho.... or poo as my other half thought it was pronounced back.

Nu Spice next door is a gem, there is a lot of love for their goat curry in our household.

will Mo Pho be run by the same people as Long Time?

We dined at Thai Thai last night. Feels much better inside than it looks from the outside. Noodles are especially nice. But it has a slightly desolate, unfrequented atmosphere. It deserves more custom.

I like the look of Thai Thai from the outside, always have a delicious meal there but yes wish it was busier am often the only table. Can't wait for mo pho!

And inside feels like you're in Thailand

Ramble said...

I think Thai Thai needs a little advertising campaign/revamp. We are put off going by the fact it's so quiet, esp when you know you're going to get pretty good Thai food from Smiles.

Looking forward to Mo Pho! We usually head to Mamma Pho (Where Cafe East used to be) or Viet Rest on Deptford HIgh Street for our Vietnamese fix. We tried Le Gia on Deptford Broadway last week and it was very good although the decor is a little strange. The Spicy Pho and the beef wrapped in Betel leaves were delicious. They have Karaoke rooms.

So many choices.

It is easy to get the impression that Thai Thai are just playing at the restaurant business. I have had some disappointing experiences there, people vote with their feet.

Restaurants tend to revolve around the expertise of the chef and how the kitchen is run. If they leave, it all starts to fall apart.

Brockley has few professionally run restaurants. Or indeed, professionally run takeaways.

It is not through lack of potential customers. Do it right and they will come.

I hope Yo Mo Pho comes up to the standard set by Long Time at is peak. I used to get very perplexed with Long Time. But they changed the place so many times. Getting rid of the tables, extending the kitchen, then bringing the tables back again.

I am quite a fan of the 'takeaway with a few tables and bring your own bottle' format - casual dining.

Just had a quick chat with the owners, who were sanding table tops outside. They are indeed new owners and were excited by the new business. (I shall miss Tom though, he was a really nice bloke.) Mo Pho will open middle of next week.

where has Tom gone????

Anonymous said...

Looks like Tom is taking a 'long time' break!
Speaking go the new owner, I think he said his name is Tang(?), I'm quite excited about it's opening. Looks like they have done a fab job with the revamp of the place - a big improvement from it's previous appearance!!

Anonymous said...

Your defo right about the look of the place, I've just run past today as I wanted to see if they were open yet.
The tables have come back and theres seating in there again!
I can't remember their names (sorry) but they seem really positive about their menu and that they are going to be doing authentic vietnamese food instead of holding onto the five different menu's \longtime used to have.

I'm really looking forward to my first bowl of Pho when they do open.
:)

Keen to give this another try, anyone know when it is expected to open?

Hi,
I just popped past and asked, and they ste opening this wednesday! Looks great in there!

I agree, they're very friendly, I just hope I persuaded them to put a couple of tables outside. They own some of the pavement they said.

We got a take away from Mo Pho tonight and it was fantastic - really delicious authentic Vietnamese food. Very friendly people were keen to have feedback on their menu which they said would evolve depending on what people wanted added or didn't like, but it's all Vietnamese, which is good I think. Also, it's nice in there again and there's room for about 18 people to sit. Very promising start.

Visited tonight, I'm no expert on Vietnamese food but it was great. I had a takeaway thing, the broth was in a separate tub, it was hot but I got it boiling in the microwave before pouring over the noodles and meat. Really good, very light though so id go for a starter as well if your hungry. Big thumbs up.
