Elevator bitch

The lift access to the northbound platform of Brockley Station is not only ugly and over-engineered, it's also taking an age to build.

Now, thanks some probing from BCer Peter Laurie, London Overground have confirmed that the lift won't be operational until next year.

Ha, more than a year just to build a single short lift. Why do we still believe we will ever get the Bakerloo Line extension build in our lifetime?

Everyone who uses Brockley station has witnessed the glacial pace of the work on the lift and has no doubt wondered when it will be opened. What reason for the delay? Some challenging technical problem?

I do hope there will be some sort of ceremony to mark the occasion. A grand opening. Speeches by the project manager and the legions of workers involved, they can all bring the families to mix with the joyous throngs of commuters. Maybe the mayor could come and say a few words about this fine example of engineering prowess and the considerable benefit to long suffering commuters of Brockley.

Over a year to build a lift? That's roughly the time it took to build the Shard...

the shard took 3 yrs, point still valid though

What is it about public works in this area that they take so long?

The lampost renewal project seems to have been frozen in time, the streets of Brockley seem to be lined with old lamposts with headless new ones standing there, waiting for someone to complete the job. Is it part of the project plan to leave them like that for a few months?

Amazing the long delayed HOP lifts will beat it. That said they are a pair of monstrous carbuncles.

The Bakerloo line extension is not in the hands of Lewisham. There is hope,,,

I believe the reason for the delay is because somebody suggested that a escalator system might be a better idea for getting down the stairs. Tfl has paused the project while they await the outcome of envirmental impact assessments and a cost analysis.

Bonkers, when I asked last week when it would be opened, they told me this week. I don't know what happened between then and now?

When I asked about it in June they said it would open in 2 weeks. So I don't set much store by what the station staff tell me. I was relaxed about earlier on but my toddler hasn't got the memo about waiting for the lift and keeps on growing, with the stairs becoming harder to manage. Thanks for looking into it, even though the response is not very encouraging.
