Don't know why they haven't suggested Ziman's, next to Crofton Park station on Brockley Road. They're NHS and are taking patients. They're okay; if you're an NHS patient you need to be a bit bolshy and make them clean your teeth and have six monthly check-ups as they'll try to get away with the minimum amount of work.

Brockley Kate said...

I was wondering.
Perhaps those are the only dentists taking new NHS patients?

Brockley Kate said...

Oops, no, I see you've already addressed that.
Weird. Who knows!

Oh well - all mentions of OTHER NHS dentists welcome, I'll add them to the main post.

patrick1971 said...

Well, I say they're taking patients. They certainly were when I had a check-up about six weeks ago, but that may have changed.

I use Ziman's. Seem to be OK, not had anything drastic done. They didn't go for the drill or suggest any spurious work which apparently some dentists do?

I use one on Borough High St, abit pricy but thats what Dental Insurance is for.

You're better searching at the NHS Choices site for a full list:

I go to Ziman and they seem ok.

Barry.

I took both myself and my daughter away from Zimans. They used to miss a few things.

Actually x-rayed me twice, and could not find the problem after three visits. But did promote a service that could replace bridge-work, at a cost of thousands. (Boy did he go on.) Eventually, after weeks of pain, I took myself to the dental hospital, which found the problem - a rotting tooth under the bridge. (They were students for Christ's sake!)Finally, after booking my daughter in before school, the dentist arrived late. That was enough.

Try Perry Vale Clinic, which also has a section for sedation.

I went to R. Herring in New Cross (purely because the name made me think of comedian Richard Herring). The reception looks murky and 70s and didn't make me feel it was a reputable and clean establishment but maybe that's just judging a book by it's cover. The chap I saw there gave me fillings with no injection and just told me to 'trust' him. I was terrified but to be fair he didn't touch any nerves and because there was no injection the whole thing was about £13, which is ridiculously cheap.

I use one a bit further towards Honor Oak from Crofton Park. It may be the Brockley Grove one you have listed there. It's basically in a converted 3 bed semi! They were certainly taking NHS patients when I registered... Reminds me, I should go for a check up...

Now go to Ziman's after having a very bad experience at the one that is near the mini roundabout in Crofton Park, which left me needing to shell out big money for an emergency dentist in central London on a Sunday, until I could get to Ziman's to fix the work that the other guy did.

Headhunter said...

Oh dear KFH, that's the dentist I use. You mean the one in the converted house next to the roundabout? Perhaps I need to change dentist....

We used to go that practice, HH, but that was before the dentist retired and his son took over. I didn't take to him and didn't like the way he interacted with my very small daughter, so moved to Ziman's on the recommendation of a friend. I find our dentist there absolutely excellent and have no complaints after well over ten years.

kung fu hustle said...

Yes, I do. Left me in excrutiating pain. Ziman's is just fine though.

I go private in Blackheath. Never had any probs.

I need a bit of work doing. Is it possible to take up insurance and then utilise it, or is that not allowed? i.e. do they get snotty if the conditions pre-exist?

I am finally moving in to the teafactory at the end of the month and need to register with a doctor, any sugestions?

I try and steer clear of the NHS butchers. From giving me a mouth full of amalgam (with no anaesthetic) in the early seventies and eighties when white fillings were available, to painful descaling treatments, my paranoia leads me to think that they're out to punish me for not taking enough care of my hampsteads. The NHS types are often young and trying to gain experience before they set up their own private operation. I try and go private whenever possible now; friendly manner from older practitioners and totally painless procedures.

That aside, we do seem blessed with the choice of NHS practices around these parts compared with the rest of the country. I was in Grinitch yesterday and noticed one touting for new NHS business.

Ed - the St Johns Medical Centre on Loampit Hill is good - I've found it easy to get appointments at short notice - and staff are friendly.

M said...

Ed, the Hilly Fields medical centre on Adelaide Avenue has always been fine for me.

drakefell debaser said...

Ed, Dr Berman and Partner 58 Vesta Rd are quite good - open longer hours and close to the Tea Factory.

All this talk of dentists reminds me of my last visit to one 9 years ago. I really should get a check up.

Headhunter said...

Ed - I'm registered at Hilly Fields Med Ctre, not that great but it'll do!

Anon - Insurers tend to take a dim view of you taking out insurance and then getting expensive treatment done on pre existing conditions! Bit like crashing your car and then insuring it and billing the insurer post crash!

Headhunter said...

I live in Manor Ave and my closest surgery is the Vesta Rd place but they refused to allow me to sign up! They said that I had to go to Hilly Fields even though it is definitely further away...

I've been with Ziman's since about 1992ish. They had to sort out a dodgy crown from my previous Dentist but I have had no problems with them since then.

I used to see the head of the practice Nana Achempong but he only does private work now. I am currently seeing a younger dentist who does NHS work, but so far no complaints about her.

Monkeyboy said...

I've found St Johns OK. Also have a pharmacist downstairs, handy for picking up your Methadone.

Ed, what's the story with the Tea Factory? Happy with the build/price/view? Do we get a sneak 'through the keyhole' picture? I quiet like it from the outside, though not sure about the big hole in one side. I kept thinking they had left a big window out so someone could get a Grand Piano in.

If you just need updated details of local doctors with surgery hours etc, look at www.locallife.co.uk/lewisham/health

- I'm regulalry updating it so please let me know if there are places to add!

I would recommend Richard Herring at New Cross but then he's my best mate's Dad so I would. The key is to make sure you see him and not one of the other dentists at the practice - sounds like you saw one of the others creepylesbo but it's not easy now he only does one day a week.

I'm had a partly filled in form for Hilly Fields doctors since I moved into my flat since May. Really must take it back...

I've been with the St. John's Medical Centre for a few years (since before they moved to the new building), and to be honest they've been pretty bad on several occasions. The pharmacy downstairs is convenient, I agree, but...
On the last occasion I went, I signed in on arrival on their automatic machine and waited. After 30 mins where I was the only person in the waiting room I was pretty annoyed... the receptionists were sitting just across from me & didn't once speak to me. I asked them what was going on, and they phoned the nurse's consultation room only to discover that she hadn't shown up. No-one knew where she was & she hadn't phoned. I asked what I should do & they just shrugged... at which point I noticed a woman run along the back corridor - I asked if that was her and they said "oh yes, it seems to be". On another occasion the doctor I saw had to fill out a form for me containing quite personal information, and he said that he wasn't sure he'd done it right. He told me to show it to the receptionists on my way out and get them to check it. They seemed utterly shocked that he'd asked me to do that! So yeah, not that happy with them. Anyone else had anything similar?
My friend goes to Hilly Fields and she says they're good so far.

Does anyone go to the Health Centre on Turnham Road (on the dark side!)? I have to sign up with a doctor and they have early and late opening hours which would be good for me.

Tressillian James said...

Hilly Fields Medical Centre has some latish hours (until 7.00pm some days?) and I can recommend both the recepetion staff and the doctors (esp Dr Benard). Went to St Johns once on a referal and the receptions were really offhand - but perhaps they were having a bad day.

Monkeyboy said...

I found St Johns helpful. I think anyone who has a 'Customer Facing' role must snap every now and again. Don't think I could do it.

I had a leaflet through the door at crimbo, St Johns are introducing some new late/weekend hours I believe.

Interested to hear the posts about Dr Page's practice (the one by the mini-roundabout off the main road in Crofton Park) - I partly started this thread as a way of checking whether anyone else was dissatisfied with their service. I've got an ongoing problem with some work they did in the autumn, and they seem extremely inept and totally unbothered by the fact that, over 2 months in, I'm still in discomfort.

I've been considering going to another practice and seeing what their verdict is; interested to hear that Ziman's gets a good write-up.

Ed said...

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will look into it. I put a fair bit up a while back regarding the teafactory, mainly on the delays. I have been in New York for the last few months with work but can send a few pics/opinions when I return.

Cheers, Ed

Brockley Kate - I had a very bad experience with the one by the mini-roundabout a couple of years ago. Multiple, painful, weekly visits with agony inbetween for a treatment that, I was later told, should have been done in one session (and easily can be); hundreds of pounds charged for the sessions - and I've since suspected, having moved to a much better dentist where they provide information on charges, that the whole thing should have been free as it was emergency work.

Update: I switched to Zimans. Seem pretty good so far. My only niggle is that they are never running on time in their appointments schedule, so despite turning up on time I usually have to wait about half an hour at least. Which is rather annoying if you're heading into work afterwards.

Anonymous said...

I'm with Zimans, last time I went I saw a dentist whose name was Angel (not unfortunately as attractive as the brooding vampire with a soul of the same name but good anyway) and the receptionist let me leave my bike inside. I used to see Charlie Chan at the Herring surgery (comedy dentist names rule) nothing wrong with them but I prefer the Zimans office.

I'm with Ziman and I'm very happy, but...
...about 2 years ago a dentist at Ziman told me that one of my teeth was doomed due to decay under a filling that had gone undetected for about 20 years.
He added that if I had seen him earlier a root canal might have saved it but it was too late for that.

One year later another dentist at Ziman told me that no, it could be saved with a root canal, a 50% chance but worth a try, I agreed and fortunately the tooth is still there.

Moral of the story, in big clinics doctors come and go, some will be better (or just more optimistic) than others. The fact that average performance is good doesn't mean that the opinion you're getting is necesseraly correct and in doubt get a second opinion.

Patrick 1971 - I've been going to the Turnham Rd practice for 5 years and had no problems. You can always get an appointment on the same day so long as you call early in the morning and are happy to see any doctor. As with everywhere I prefer some doctors to others but no horror stories. I warn against the chemist next door though as they never have any stock in - It looks like something out of the Bronx with all its empty shelves.

I went to R.Herring in New Cross for the first time the other day. Once you get past the dated looking waiting room, everything was very good. My dentist introduced himself and was very friendly. He undertook quite a thorough exam and clean of my teeth considering it was on the NHS and then did a filling. The dentist made it clear all the way through what was going to be done, how much it would cost and then asked for confirmation to go ahead. I came away very satisfied with the work done and I will definitely go back.

Hi, I am new to the area and need to find a local dentist.
I would like to try the Honor Oak Dental Practice on St Norbert road. Any feedback on this one?
I also read good comments about Zimans on this blog but then found this online http://www.nhs.uk/Services/dentists/PatientFeedback/DefaultView.aspx?id=21987
Anyone has been recently and could provide feedback?

mb said...

I'm always suspicious about 'feedback' sites. any service will have some complaints, all will make mistakes, mistakes with health care are often traumatic. Complaints will make more impact, not sure if it's an accurate measure. I've found them great for admitedly minor poking around.

SoniaB said...

Thanks Mb, I will give them a try.

Never had a problem at Ziman's. We see Dr Davies.

Thank you Tressiliana. I have an appointment on Saturday. Soniab

I've been going to Zimans since the 1970s. No problems. I'm NHS.

Rowan said...

So it's a few years on now. What does everyone say about the dentists in the area? I have a friend who personally recommended Page on Brockley Grove (near the roundabout) and is Zimans still a good choice? I would be very happy to hear what people think now and whether they have changed.

Currently sitting here with a numb face, having had a filling done by Barbara at Zimans. Absolutely brilliant, professional, competent and very gentle. Had an NHS clean last week and saw the hygienist there as well. All excellent. Gets my vote.
