The Broca Food Market's big move

Erin from the Broca writes:

We are moving the Broca Food Market over to Brockley Cross, to the shop currently occupied by Birds Dress Agency on Malpas Road.

We're aiming to be in and open by middle of December. The Birds ladies are having a sale now and will be leaving on November 22nd.

The Mantle Road property is being advertised to let but will be run as a community space to hire for pop ups, workshops, classes, children parties, art shows and son on, from the end of October until the new tenant is approved.

For the time between between Broca Food Market closing and reopening in the new space, we will be selling our bread, eggs and bits of the organic veg in the Broca cafe. Phew!! All change!

And just in case anyone was wondering, the plan was in place even before the Sainsbury's opened, so no-one need worry about mung beans being chased out of the area by the supermarkets.

The move is great news for Brockley Cross, which is overdue some new businesses, although it's a pity to lose Birds, rather than fill one of the vacant units.

Don't think so. I reckon they have just taken a break.

think this is great but please lower the prices a bit....

sounds great but can Broca lower their prices a tad, otherwise i might still need to do the walk to Sainsburys

A decent takeaway would work there, sod all on the "Westside" and not much to write home about on BC

The Broca will be missed but will only be a short walk away. I hope we get something interesting in its place in the longer term and not just an expansion of Sainsburys, although v pleased with the new local store.

anyone know who to ask about setting up a pop-up in the vacant unit?

Good luck with the new space. Those shutters are a night mare to open in the mornings. (FlourPowerGuy)

That's great news! Brockley Cross is on the up :)

Come over to the east side nearer the conservation area my lovely! Leave those deadbeat skint westsiders to their Sainsbury's Basics....

I don't think it's much of a loss to Westside. It was a 'nice to have' rather than a 'need to have.' Sainsbury's arrival has been great and I only ever used to go into Broca on the off chance they had something - it's certainly not somewhere I'd bother to go out of my way for because they would often be out of the thing I wanted.

Glad the Birds Dress Agency shop is not being left empty though.

Sainsburys shines on the westside like a beacon of honest fare. Costcutters is still keeping it real on the east site despite the incoming forces of twee.

Yessssssss!!! So glad for the move as this side of the Cross needs some better shopping options. Broca I am a faithful shopper - but please sort out your stock. Went in for some groceries the other day - and lo and behold, you were out of lentils. How can a health food store be out of lentils?

Hey well we on the Eastside welcome Broca with open arms - their stock (when they have it) is great quality - and I've always found things like eggs (£1/6!!!), fresh bread and veg reasonable.

Sainsburys sell 6 honest eggs for £1

Oh no! Broca will be very sadly missed on Mantle Road. I would always pop in to see what fresh lovelies are available and pick up some yummy fresh bread. very upset to hear you will no longer be so close!

Damn. I live above the broca and it was one of the main reasons i moved here. If its sold to a bookies or something im gonna go on a rampage.

why the sad face said...

it's a really good site so maybe another budding local entrepreneur may grab it quickly - there's already a bookies next door so doubt it would go to another one. Alternatively is this the time that Costa, or Cafe Nero make their Brockley move?

why the sad face said...

actually why are they moving? surely the current site is better than where they're moving too?

Headhunter said...

Also their onions are cheaper than Sainsbury's - something like 87p per kg

not everything is cheaper said...

Broca's cannellini beans aren't cheaper - 99p for a tin of beans!

Honest meaning battery.

Really happy that the Broca crossing the tracks but sad to lose Birds, with the two old birds from whom I have bought some great things over the years, usually with the sharp-eyed direction to 'look after it' on leaving the shop. Irreplaceable and a loss to SE4.

This is a real shame for us Revelon folk, but I suppose it won't be too much of a walk away..

yeah but why? said...

The article doesn't say why they are moving or if they even wanted to move? Have they been pushed out by high rents? Why move when the existing shop is not full to capacity, and as far as I can tell the new premises is about the same size.

Aintitthetruth said...

Maybe they just didn't want to state the obvious truth. It's better on the east side of Brockley.

Headhunter said...

I seriously doubt a major coffee chain would move in there, there really just isn't the footfall to make it attractive. It's possible that an independent may open but a major - never.

What do you want some identikit corporate coffee shop in there anyway? It's not as if the likes of Starbucks actually make decent coffee. It's such a prominent site on the west side, far better that it's taken by something more interesting than Starbucks/Costa/Nero/Blah blah blah....

yeah but why? said...

You think? Sainsbury's didn't think so and they know a thing or two about making money.

you pay for quality and health. cheap will wreck your body... but carry on if you please, it's your right.

Anyone know how we get in touch with the people looking to sell?

Anyone know what the latest with this is? No sign of the Broca Food Market in Brockley Cross yet!

The move's not happening. BFM is staying put after negotiations stalled.
