Magi on the move

Magi, the popular card and gift shop on Coulgate Street, will soon be moving to new premises on Brockley Road. They will be taking over the shop that Professionails nail salon currently occupies, next to Costcutter.

We'll keep you updated with any news we hear.

Ooooh I love Magi. I'm assuming that moving to the Professionails site gives them more space? I won't have to worry about knocking things over so much.

am excited that there will be more space for Brocca! Hope Magi's doesnt lose out on the passing trade from the train station though....

This is great news, another good reason to pedestrianise Coulgate Street. Some outdoor seating in Spring and Summer would be fantastic!

Headhunter said...

Good news. I always thought Broca needed more space. The Broca empire is expanding! I mentioned this before, but does anyone know if Dandelion Blue is reopening? It's now "under offer"

I had a feeling Magi was 'in transition' - at least that explains why you feel like you're walking in on someone mid-move - love the cards but doesn't it seem like they want to make it as difficult as possible for you to shop there?!

Magi is a beautiful shop and one which I have frequented a number of times.

Admittedly, It is abit girly which is abit of an offput for such a masculine man like myself...

Great - really pleased about these changes.

This means I might actually enter Magi without worrying about swiping something on the floor.

Pleased Brocca is expanding too as now may actually get a seat.

Question: At what point does a successful, growing, cuddly local business become a corporate behemoth holding the organic loaf suppliers in a purchasing strangle hold?

Franchise anyone?

Tesco started life as a local store you know!

(only kidding.... just goes to show that trendy shops can be made to work with a bit of sound management. I wouldn't have the guts to expand in the teeth of a recession)

Very good news, all of it.

Unlike other posters I have never had the courage to enter Magi, inspite of its convenience, because it looks so prison-like from outside with those god-awful grates on the windows. I'm sure Erin will have the sense to get rid of those.

As for Professionails, I'm not sad to see it go, as it also had limited appeal, cheap and kind of cliquey. However some brave entrepreneur has *got* to notice that Brockley's working women need a reasonably-priced-but-spa-like place for their waxing, tweezing and nails.. desperately! Somewhere to slink into right off the train..

brilliant, good news and good luck to Magi and Broca.

My wife loves Professionails.

Cheap and cliquey? I'm told that there are some seriously talented people working there and it is very much a local business, with some members of the same family also working in both the baker and hairdresser. Not cheap in either sense of the word.

The clique exists elsewhere I feel.

Firstly: I've never been to Professionails and I'm sure it's a great business.

Secondly: I'm slightly rankled by the last comment because it reads like it was written by someone professionally affiliated with Professionails pretending to be a member of the public. Not cool.

Thirdly: I apologise if I'm incorrect.

Nick seemed to suggest the same on his twitter.

No anon, that was in reference to something else. Just talking aloud. Apologies for any confusion.

I wrote the anon at 9:50 on 10 February 2009 09:50.

I typed in my name, but it posted as anon for some reason.

I promise you that I have no connection with Professionails and have never even been inside. My wife has been going for years - from back when they used to be located on Coulgate Street itself in fact, before moving to the current location.

They are an example of a very local business for local people and I objected to them being critised out of hand at the very time when they might be going under.

angelofthewest there are some brave entrepreneurs across Hilly Fields next to Ladywell station who have noticed that Brockley and Ladywell's working women need a reasonably priced but spa like place to get their waxing, tweezing and nails done. It's called Geddes Hair and Beauty. It looks great, the beauty rooms are lovely, they open late nights and Sunday's. They always have new offers on-if that's not a plug what is?
Sad to hear about Professionails though-people always speak highly of them-I hope they are just relocating. Good luck to the Brocca and Magi's also.

Could they wax my minge?

I had a Hollywood there so the answer to your question is most definitely yes-I now have the snatch of a ten year old-oh God shouldn't have said that!

Wicked, will ring them in the morning. Can't beat a personal recommendation!

The content you have provided is pretty interesting and useful and I will surely take note of the point you have made in the blog.

Today while I was surfing the Internet, I read about Gel Nails being the latest trend now in the nail fashion industry. After reading about gel nails, I think it’s a great way to dress up your nails giving them a trendy look. I also came across this site gel-nails where you can check out some really cool stuff for your nail decoration.

If you are a professional nail artist or run a nail salon, you can get a bulk order discount and use the best nail products for your customers. I have bought the professional luxury gel nail kit from here and this is great value for my money.

I thought this information might be useful for anyone looking for genuine nail decoration stuff and may not know where to buy them from.

With the recent comments on this thread it's in danger of turning into Brockley's version of Wetlands...

or moist patches - which is apparently the literal translation - changed to wetlands for our delicate anglo saxon sensibilities.

when is the move happening?

yes I totally agree - we desperately need a good beautician's near the station....a good entrepreneurial lady could really make afortune there....

Does anyone know when the sparkly new Magi will open? I need cards! Any suggestions as to where I can buy decent birthday cards in the meantime?

Headhunter said...

Asda, Old Kent Road. They're about 99p. Buy loads and loads of cards for all occasions and select when needed....

Tressillian James said...

@HH - I hope you don't do that for anniversarys and Valentines

Headhunter said...

I'm all love 'n' romance, me. On Valentine's Day I pulled out a pack of Asda cards and let the other half pick one. Can't say fairer than that....

haha HH, very funny.

am I imagining that there's anew restaurant in that strip? I drove past "Gellens wine bar" or similar, but it was late at night and i've got a horrible feeling it is grotty by day.

there is SO much scope for a good restaurant there. Ecosium or whatever it's called now doesnt work. It's just as bad under this management as the previous place was. very unfortuantely. Id LOVE it to be good. they could amke a fortune.

how does one pronounce Magi? Is it Magi as in the 3 wise men? Or is it an alternative spelling of Maggie?

Anonymous said...

Cards are such a con - even 99p for a piece of printed card is about 97p too much.

It looked like they were moving on Friday and Saturday, so I would have thought it would be open at some point this week.

Finally made it into the new shop. It's as fab as ever with more space and even more stuff. I only went in for a mother's day card and came out with a load of stuff!
