Door suppliers

Sue has written with a very specific request, which she hopes BC readers will able to offer advice on, but more broadly, there are lots of door suppliers around and restrictions on the types of doors suitable in the local conservation areas, so please use this thread to discuss door suppliers nearby. Here's what Sue asks:

Please could you ask your readers if they know of any good companies to refurb a 1900 door. I'm looking to get it draught-proofed, the glazing replaced with some nice stained glass (it's currently 3 different types of glass) and possibly some perspex/secondary glazing behind the double glazing to insulated it a bit more. Can any of your readers recommend someone to do this?

These guys did our sash windows last year (draught proofed, renovated & put in double glazing into the old sash windows) and they did a good job & were reasonably priced (in comparison with some others I looked at) and they also do doors.

Just realised that my previous post (Anon 01.41) sounds like a sales pitch. I saw their work at the Christmas Cockpit arts open studios in deptford and was very impressed by their work.

We used the London Door Company a few years back & we're very happy for a front door and matching fanlight. They came and looked around the neighbours to get a feel for the local style and then discussed what we wanted.

We used Dawes fir Doors and Forest Hill for a new door. Not sure if they do refurbs but the service and product was excellent. http://www.dawesfordoors.com/

Nick. An area of the site for recommending things like this (plumbers, plasterers, door and fireplace suppliers, etc.. ) would be really useful. At present it seems to fall between the classifieds and reviews sections but does not comfortably fit with the content of either. Could this be considered as a potential enhancement to the site?

I can recommend Apollo stained glass as they replaced a broken panel in our door following an atempted break in a few years back. You can't tell the difference between the old panels and the new.

Anon - yes, I've tried this a couple of times in the past and the threads have been abject failures. First someone says that they wish there was a nearby fishmonger, then someone says that there is one in Nunhead and the thread degenerates. So it goes.

However, the Brockley Central community is now considerably bigger and smarter than it was last time I tried, probably 18 months ago, so I'll give it another shot.

I agree, an area of the site specifically for recommendations of local trades people (builders, carpenters etc.) would be really helpful. When looking for someone to fit windows and do building work for us after just moving to the area, I found the recommendations on the Local Businesses and Trades section of the East Dulwich Forum very helpful indeed, and it would be great to have something like that on this website.

For general building conservation information try this website which produces the annual "Building Conservation Directory" of suppliers, advice etc...

Hi Sue
our neighbour's just installed a lovely Algiers Road style door, said he got it from a chap in East London where they do refurb too.

I'll ask him for the details and email you.
