The Hobgoblin - New Cross Councillors call for license review

Cllr Dean Walton has blogged about New Cross pub The Hobgoblin:

Following complaints of noise nuisance in the Telegraph Hill area, the three Ward Councillors for the area, Cllrs Page, Flood & Cross, have called for a review of the for the Hobgoblin, a sports & music bar opposite New Cross Gate Station.

The complaints have been documented over a large period, but are understood to have started when the current licensee took over the premises - and probably coincide with the smoking ban.

Not suprisingly I can't hear the Hobgoblin from Tyrwhitt Road.

This does however raise certain issues about the community and about city living c.f. discussion on here about the Acquarium Licence extension.

Other than Student Halls I didn't think there was much residetial accommodation near the Hobgoblin. So who then is doing the complaining? The students? Anti pub do-gooders?

Any other suggestions welcome.....

exactly what I was thinking... surely there's just railway lines round the back?

Depends how noisy it gets becuase the gardens of those at the bottom of Jerningham Rd back on to the railway, perhaps they are the ones complaining.

I've a friend living at the bottom of Jerningham Road whose life has been made a nightmare by this pub and its extended licensing - to the extent she is cutting her losses and selling up. There were huge amplifiers in the back garden where the smokers are and her bed literally shook with it. They did not have a licence for this and so were obliged to move the amplifiers inside - but then had the windows or french windows wide open with the amplfiers pointing outwards so it made no difference at all.

There is the answer then.

Dean - tell the Landlord to reduce the noise to acceptable levels at acceptable times - end of story.

Sounds ridiculous that the landlord is told to move his speakers inside, but is allowed to get away with having them blaring outwards through rear doors!

Most pubs I have been to with extended opening hours are obliged to close their gardens after 11pm or even earlier. Why is this landlord allowed to have his open with music blaring?

I think that was the case - I just know that she was really being driven to the end of her tether by it.

I am a resident who has suffered from noise from this pub. The pub garden backs onto houses at the bottom of Jerningham Rd. The pub has been a longstanding problem for many people as the noise (music, bands, shouting etc) quite often goes on well into the night (1am on Sun-Thurs evenings, 2am Fri and Sat.) The pub's position on New Cross Rd can be misleading - in fact the sound travels quite far down the railway cutting affecting residents in Telegraph Hill. Ultimately, residents don't want to see this pub close and I am sure a comprimise solution will be met at the licence meeting.

Is this part of a chain/franchise? Only asking 'cos there's the Forest Hill pub with the same name (formerly known as the Pie and Kilderkin aka The Pie that Killed a Man).

Hobgoblin is a trading name of the Wychwood brewery. Like Greene King they are still small enough to own pubs.

I can never understand the attraction of loud music - must be getting old.

So today's quiz question - which local pub is run by Greene King?

For those interested in New Cross hostelries, The White Hart now renamed Uniques Gentleman's Club has an advert in Today's Metro.

I assume this means they are open for business.

...as is the club

Noise levels were somewhat loud last summer when events were taking place outside but I'm amazed that they would effect residents all the way across the railway tracks.
I can now conduct a conversation at normal levels in the garden of said establishment whilst live music is being played inside the 'conservatory' area (I use the term loosely)so wonder whether the problem has been solved?.....
