Local new year's honours

Reverend Barry Edward Carter of St Andrew's Church, Brockley Road has been awarded an MBE for services to the community in Brockley in today's New Year honours list.

Other local people to be honoured include John Skinner, Director of Music at Haberdashers' Aske's, Telegraph Hill and Van Cuong Truong, headteacher at the Lewisham Indo-Chinese Community School, Clyde Street, Deptford. Both men received an MBE.

Thisislocallondon has a good round-up, but congratulations to all three.

Having sung in choirs directed by John Skinner, he deserves the MBE for services to imaginatively sarcastic comment, if nothing else. I you haven't been told you are singing like a squashed spider witha hangover you haven't lived. Congrats to all the local people honoured.

That's great news about Barry getting a gong and very much deserved, in my opinion. Although he theoretically retired a couple of months back (after 30 years at St Andrew's, I think it was) he still seems to be leading services etc until his replacement is in position.

St Andrew's Centre is very much at the heart of the local community, with loads of events held there every week, from pensioner lunch clubs to mother and baby groups, and I suspect a sizeable chunk of its continued success is down to Barry's hard work over the years.

Just hope somebody takes over from Barry.

Congratulations to Barry Carter. I've only been to a couple of services at St Andrews but I really warmed to him, and was uplifted by his deceptively simple but challenging sermons.

He has a thriving congregation there and I hope that a worthy successor can be found.
