Officers advise Bullock against Ladywell traveller site

As reported by the Ladywell Village Improvement Group and This is Local London, Council officers have recommended that Lewisham abandons its plans to locate a traveller site at Church Grove in Ladywell. It seems likely that the Council will accept the recommendation that:

Based on the outcome of the consultation and an independent Technical Report on Access, the proposals for redevelopment of the Church Grove site to meet the current accommodation needs of the gypsy and traveller community in the borough be discontinued and a new site search begun.

The proposal had been met by fierce local opposition. See here and here.

Good. From an access point of view, it seemed a daft scheme.

Put it in Brockley Cross, the council likes dumping stuff there ...

Why did the residents have to go to so much trouble to get the council to listen. The proper assessments should have been done before the site was announced as a possibility.

Wondr wwhere this will go next? Hilly fields?

Correction - CHURCH GROVE rather than Grove Park

there was fierce opposition also against the rehab center in Brockley. So why the inconsistent response from the officers?

Fierce? Vocal on a blog, not really translated into a coherent argument against. A drug rehabilitation for addicts who live in lewisham is not equivalent to a travelers site so not sure what consistency you're looking for?

So in 2007 the site was suitable as a site for travellers and was given planning permission.

Now it's considered not suitable, has the width of the road in Church Grove shrunk over the years?

@Anon 8:35, if you read the lengthy report on the proposed sites, it's not so much that the ladywell site was especially suitable to begin with more that it was the most suitable of the 5 proposed sites... but still had many problems, access being just one of them (another was it being liable to flooding!), i'm surprised it took so long for it to be finally rejected but I think the council has had to tread very carefully and go down every avenue to avoid any accusations of discrimination
