I hope there is not too much damage - I've had a few very nice meals there.

I prefer Mai Hong in Ladywell.

I passed it a couple of hours ago. No obvious signs of damage in the public areas, but the hoses were running through into the back rooms.

Update: The fire has been put out and there has been only a small amount of damage with no injuries. Sadly, I have no further information regarding the ornamental pond and fake oriental seating...

You could smell burning in the Town Hall. Jokes among the reception and post room staff about cooked sushi being no good.

Sad to hear that it suffered a fire, but I would struggle to call it a Japanese restaurant, when it first opened it was more 'authentic' (and I put this loosely) but over the years the quality has really gone down. Has anyone tried Poppy Hana in Bermondsey? It is one of the only restaurants in SE London that advertises in the Japanese Language newspapers in London. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

I'm not sure of the 'credentials' of Poppy Hana but I've heard from many that it is a bit hit and miss - espeically the sushi. If you're a real stickler for authentic Japanese food, cooked by real Japanese chefs and served by actual Japanese people then there is a Japanese restaurant behind Mornington Crescent that is almost perfect....except that they like to put the gaijin's in the basement so not to scare off their actual Japanese clientelle.
