Evening Standard concedes defeat to Brockley Central

Since relaunching as a free paper, the Evening Standard has given Brockley a wide berth, no-doubt recognising that it cannot compete with the Brockley Central news juggernaut.

Diamond Geezer explains that its distribution strategy is based around zone 1 tube stations while Londonist points out that "all of south-east London except Lewisham is virtually an Evening Standard desert".

And Time Out wonders why the best bloggers are from South East London...

When it was announced the Standard was to be free their spokesperson talked of distribution in the West Wnd and Westminster as if it was something new.

As for bloggers in SE London is it 'cos there ain't much else to do in the area?

As long as you don't start to employ that complete arse Rod Liddle then we're all happy.

We don't want or need the Standard anyway. The sooner we can get a Brockley paper going the better. Maybe these guys can help - http://blog.newspaperclub.co.uk/

Newspapers across the US are folding (excuse the pun) at some frightening rate (2 or 3 a week, maybe?) and the papers over here are employing ever more desperate measures to prop up circulation. The last thing we need is another local newspaper. If I want to know what's going on in the world, I buy a national paper or get the news on TV/radio. For local news I come to Brockley Central. Simples!

I like printed press very much, but this is a mess. So people won't find it in the usual place, OK print twice as many...but dead in the water idea. Hope I'm wrong. Mike.

The Standard today had a 6 page 'feature' on spread betting, together with lots of ads for spread betting firms and top tips. Obviously I'd be the last person to suggest that they are selling space while dressing it up as consumer advice.

Why insist on printing stuff at all? Damages the environment. Get it electronically instead.
