Goldsmiths Tavern to go gastro?

New Cross food blogger Hollowlegs reports on Twitter that New Cross' Goldsmiths Tavern is about to undergo a makeover courtesy of Capital Pubs, owners of The Bishop in East Dulwich. Her intel is usually as reliable as her reviews.

As Transpontine says, based on their track record, it seems likely that Capital Pubs will go down the gastro route.

With the Wickham Arms currently up for sale, this is a particularly interesting move, suggesting that the pub industry has confidence that investment in creating a high-quality offer in this area will pay off.

I thought it was the New Cross Inn that was up for sale.

It seems that any pub owner is open to a bid these days.

First I've heard about the Wickham being up for sale. Are you sure?

Yes.

It's a confident move and it was also a confident move for the guys at The London Particular to set up a relatively 'upmarket' coffee shop in the area.

Opinions about the pros and cons and gentrification aside, new openings such as this will hopefully convince other businesses to do the same, bringing more job opportunities to the area in the process.

I heard a rumour Richard of the Royal Albert was having a look at the Wickham, any truth ?

Hope not. Don't mind Antic but it will be no fun if they run half the pubs in the area

It's a relief that there will continue to be a place for people to eat and drink there, rather than becoming derelict or housing as is often the fate of pubs. The current place is OK, but I think has struggled to develop much of an identity since it replaced the GMT Lagedraleks era pub.

I would imagine that Capital will want it to be a bit more upmarket than its current manifestation, but probably will also pitch it to take into account its location and market, including students and college staff. So hopefully a decent pizza oven will be part of the plan, could do with one in New Cross, Nunhead/East Dulwich/Greenwich is too far away sometimes.

Blooming hell, Capital are taking over South East London. Already opened the Actress and VIctoria this year. They seem to be trying to get a pub in every SE postcode! Best of luck to them.

I think its Antic not Capital.

Give me the original Tavern to a gastropub any day. It was one of the best bars in London before it was gutted and reopened in its present guise...

The old tavern was hilarious. Only bar I've ever been in that I've seen a multiple-pierced barman leap the bar and throw someone out horizontally.

Is it up for sale, or has it been bought by Antic, Capital - it all sounds rather confusing. I can't see it being sold anywhere.

What's confusing you?

Goldsmiths Tavern has been sold to Capital.

The Wickham Arms is up for sale.

I had no idea the Wickham was up for sale! Surely that deserves an article of it's own rather than a sub mention in an article about a pub in New Cross that many in Brockley may never have been to!

What else do you know Nick, you can't drop a bombshell like that as an afterthought. Do we think it'll end up as flats?

It's been mentioned a few times by readers over the last few months and I don't know much, other than that it's the lease that's for sale - to run it as a pub.

The latest gossip I heard on the Wickham is that an Italian Restauranteur is interested.

Sound like a big version of La Lanterna is envisaged.

Or not?

Oh. I haven't been spending enough time here... My local knowledge is slipping...

Following on from TM's first post, I saw today that the for sale sign has come down from the New Cross Inn.

Maybe if you used the Wickham more you would have heard.

Wasn't the Goldsmiths tavern where Vic & Bob started their career?
There should be a plaque.

We used to run/go to parties in the upstairs of the GT - so hot and with such terrible ventilation that the sweat used to run down the walls...happy times.

Yep,think Bob and Vic met there.I remember when it was the New Cross House.
