ACE van hire, Brockley

Just to show we don't hate vans per se, we thought we'd report our recent experience of hiring an ACE van. Although at one point their vans started cropping up on the local streets, that seems to be a blip and they have secured space on the MOT garage forecourt, to store their vehicles.

The office is still in New Cross, however, which means that if you want to collect a van, you are asked to give them 20 minutes notice to travel between the two sites and if you want to drop a van off outside of working hours, you need to do so in New Cross, which is a pain.

On the other hand, the guys we dealt with were nice and helpful, even dropping the van off outside our house when we said it was going to be a problem to collect it from them. The vehicle was in decent working order and it cost £50 for 24-hour hire of a transit van (£60 if you want a long wheel-base transit).

Fair play.

Another benefit from not having a CPZ - the van drop at your house. Proper service :-)

They do however park their vans all along Pomeroy St in New Cross. Not, I guess, that matters, what with that being outwith Greater Brockley for the time being.

D and M van hire should take a leaf out of their book. I see them parked on Manor Avenue all the time.

"Outwith".... Good Scottish word. Are you from Scotland, Danja?

There were 2 dirty great D&M vans on Manor Ave when I walked the dog this morning...

Shock horror, a van, A VAN!!!! parks on a road!

I understand the concept that vans parket at the MOT are better than parked on residential street (although Ace vans are often parked along Cranfield road).

My opinion is that a nice waitrore supermarket would serve the community and the local shops much better that the MOT+Van.

No, I was just using the archaic version HH. I was born in 1640 after all.

@Danja, re: Pomeroy Street, that is a fair point.

Pomeroy st is only residential on one side and wide enough to accomodate the vans. And shurely only just outside greater brockley.

A van has as much right to park as a car hasn't it ?

Spot the van driver.

Wot? No StreetVans in Brockley? We even have them in Catford now (well Hither Green anyway).

A tad more expensive but you can hire them by the hour if you only need one for a couple of hours
and they don't park them on your street - indeed they even provide incentives to provide them with parking spaces

Yes, that would be ace. I think I wrote about plans to introduce that service to Brockley, a while back.

Er, we have a streetvan in Brightling Road here in Crofton Park.

Not that it's ever there for booking :)

I take it the desire for a 'nice Waitrose' is ironic?

bumbags said...

I'd LOVE a Waitrose... (not ironically, @This is England!)
I'd also like to know if the D&M van on Upper Brockley Road will EVER move now that it has a flat tyre?
I'd also like to know HOW the tyre got flat in the first place... has someone started a militant tyre-slashing campaign?!

Anonymous said...

Why are you still all waiting for Waitrose, when you can go to the lovely one at Beckenham. And now you can order online,(click and collect) a nice lady/man at that shop will carefully select your chosen items and then you pop in to pick it all up. It's not far from Brockley, none of you will get a nose bleed if you venture into the edges of Kent!

Anonymous said...

Interesting that tonight we have 3 different van companies parking on Coulgate.

I guess the word has spead and competitors are coming in for their share of brocley free parking policy for businesses

bumbags said...

@anon I can't order Waitrose online- you can't scoop up all the 90% off red-sticker bargains :-)

Brockley Station , alight here for ACE van hire.

Have to say, had a bad experience with D&M van hire this weekend. It's long and complicated, but their customer service was awful. Ended up with me not taking the van, and them deducting £100 from my account anyway... They insist on taking your card details when you book over the phone, and if you change your mind for any reason, they charge you the full weekend rate. I should have spent longer checking the contract... Personally, the word bargepole springs to mind. Should have gone to ACE...

Anonymous said...

I've used D&M several times and always found them really helpful and very cheap.

Not sure about your case as you give no information on what notice you gave them about your decision to cancel a booking for a time of the week when their vans would be in greatest demand. I guess most van hire works on a standard contract. As with so much else, the large print giveth and the small print taketh away.

Another important aspect that you should ensure is that the company that you finally opt is a reputed and reliable bus company. Also ascertain that they have proper licenses and permits to drive their buses.

I tried to hire from D&M. When I asked to see their insurance documents as stated on the contract that I was entitled to do so, the owner became very aggressive. After much 'discussion' he refunded my deposit and I left. Perhaps i received a refund because I enquired as to what all the switched on laptops on the shelves were for- they were being repaired apparently.

Anon@17.24: if you have any connections to D&M (just a wild guess) you should be aware that a rant like that does them the worst possible disservice. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole based on your post alone.

Erm..... Think I'll use Hertz then.

Sorry James / Jerry L we can't allow unsubstantiated claims on the site, it's against our code of conduct.

D said...

Didn't you post something about a UFO sighting last week?!

jerry l said...

Fair enough Nick - though all I was actually doing was sympathising with James. I don't have any direct experience of the company mentioned.

Part of the problem is that claims of verbal abuse will always be unsubstantiated unless you record every phone call you make. And unsuspecting people like James will continue to have bad experiences because we can't warn them on here without getting into libel territory.

Can I just make the point more generally then, that if anyone encounters verbal abuse from a Brockley-based trader they should refer it to local Trading Standards? If everyone did that it may result in action being taken against them. If no-one does so then they can carry on with impunity.

OK, where do I send the payment? Do you take Western Union?

I like the "I AM ROGER" Line, not quiet "I am death, destroyer of worlds" but perhaps more direct.

There is clearly a certain amount of professional rivalry going here and a clash of egos.

A lot of potential van hire customers read this blog and I am sure while fair competition in the market place is no bad thing, having two companies undermine each others business and clog up the streets of Brockley in the process is not winning either company any fans.

I do wish you guys would get a yard each for all your vehicles and compete squarely.

Otherwise it is inevitable that, if enough people complain, traffic enforcement will eventually descend on the area with their own narrow solution to the parking problem.

Not Dave said...

well one does have a yard. An occasional van on the street isn't an issue. Using the street as your depot is.

Hope I never meet "I AM DAVE, king of kings:Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!

I tell you what, I'm torn between this and the NotW scandal. Van Wars are edging it at the moment, I had no idea that Satan was involved.

Where does Streetvan sit in the angels-devils continuum?

Anonymous said...

In a post CPZ world a traveler through Brockley might happen upon a hub cap of a van resting on a card that tells of a great King who once ruled over a vast enterprise and a great fleet of vehicles.

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.'

The central theme of "Ozymandias" is the inevitable complete decline of all leaders, and of the empires they build, however mighty in their own time

So, too, the hubris of the great van hire empires of Brockley will seem as nothing after they meet their nemesis.

Of course, by then the mung bean crowd will have moved onto "authentic period petrol vehicles" as their fad of choice. None of this modern electric stuff!
