Wearside Road development proposed

Max has pointed out that an application has been made to redevelop the site of the Carpet Corner shop on the corner of Ladywell Road and Wearside Road, next to the Playtower.

The application is for:

The demolition of the existing warehouse at 1 Wearside Road SE13 and the construction of a building of up to four storeys comprising of 5 one bedroom, 6 two bedroom and 3 three bedroom self-contained flats, together with the provision of a bin store and cycle store.

Is it just me or does the image above for this application look exactly like the Mantle Road application below but with the top chopped off?

There also seemed to be action this morning at that site along Geoffrey Road, opposite the end of Manor Ave. There was a planning application a few years back I seem to remember (reported here), to build a block of flats.

Nothing ever happened though but I could see that the grey painted gates at the entrance of the site were open this morning and the ground inside had been cleared and I think I could see piles of bricks there.

Well at first glance it's certainly no worse than the current property.

@HH - yes, there is a certain similarity. Prefer this to the Mantle Road design, personally.

It's the future - white, grey & beige boxes adjoining in a haphazard fashion. It is, however, probably an improvement on what's there now, though I'm not sure what the locals will make of 14 new dwellings with no provision for parking.

John Maples ex MP for Lewisham quoted on Saturday as saying Lewisham is 3 square miles of concrete, a borough without an identity.

Someone ask me what my point is.

What's your point?

Ever been to new development in the sticks? Cheap generic designs are not restricted to the inner city.

John Maples is correct in many ways - Lewisham can well claim to be '3 square miles of concrete', but this is the responsibility of the Council, the same Council who were keen to knock down Lewisham Bridge School - one of the few buildings of any note in Central lewisham - and replace it with . . . more concrete.

Its the fault of a weak-minded council that has little respect for the environment in its care - except for token stabs at 'green environmentalism'.

Finally some black people in the promotional blurb.

Gah! Boring and samey again! You can tell it is because it is indistingishable from the Mantle Road one. Oh how I wish someone would spare us from boring mediocrity and design something that was pretty. Or interesting. Meh
