Mantle Road block construction begins
Construction work on a new five story apartment block has begun at Number 1 Mantle Road.
A commercial unit (Use Class A1) on the ground floor and 3 one bedroom, 4 two bedroom, 1 three bedroom self-contained flats and 1 three bedroom self-contained maisonette on the upper floors incorporating balconies/roof terraces, together with associated landscaping, the provision of bin stores, 14 bicycle spaces and 2 car parking spaces with access onto Reynard Close.
The builders had to wait until Jude Court was completed, so that they could get proper access to the site. With thanks to Matt on Twitter.

Not a huge fan of the "design", but at least it has a shop below it ... more density and stuff going on in Brockley ...
Perhaps will be an improvement on the development on the opposite site of Foxwell st- which is seriously bland.
Welcome the investment just wish these developers would put a bit more thought into the design!
CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ CPZ around the station!!
Agreed ... I'm sick of cars being parked all around the roads on the west side every morning ...
out of interest, if there was a CPZ around the station, would there be provisions for the flats like this unit, 180 brockley road and the tea factory to have parking somewhere?
No to CPZ, yes to honest motoring.
I suggest we levy a tax on people flicking dog-ends on Coulgate Street? instead. That would hit the 'Green Pound' fairly hard and it would pay for the area to look nicer. Who's in?
This kind of reiterates the need for something decent at 6 Mantle Road ... the previous design would have made the streetscape look like a hot mess... Let's hope something good comes out of the renewed application...
As designs go, I think this actually looks quite interesting and pleasant enough. Not entirely sure what every expects to get. No developer is going to be building an intricate architectural masterpiece here, there will be no interesting Gaudi-esque blocks of flats.
People need to be realistic and this is quite nice and isn't just a big cube.
That's also a very big retail space - 185sqm. Presumably this might actually be chopped up into a few smaller units, or is it another supermarket due? Will there be a change of use class possible, in which case a bar/restaurant?
Would be great to have something similar to degustation at the bottom, combined with a cafe... would give the street a bit of atmosphere...
yep that would be great.
That would be one hell of a big cafe - the retail space is 50% larger than the Gantry.
Yes, another deli and a cafe, that'll really shake brockley up...
The busybody raids have brought sad times upon Brockley :-(
Shame the Maypole went, could've been turned into a great pub, of which there's precious few nearby.
What kind of business does the licence allow for?
It looks better than the proposed block at Coulgate, the building that will greet all those arriving or passing through Brockley via the station.
Will the CPZ trolls stop trolling please?
@007, A1 use class allows for:
Shops, for all or any of the following purposes—
(a)for the retail sale of goods other than hot food,
(b)as a post office,
(c)for the sale of tickets or as a travel agency,
(d)for the sale of sandwiches or other cold food for consumption off the premises,
(e)for hairdressing,
(f)for the direction of funerals,
(g)for the display of goods for sale,
(h)for the hiring out of domestic or personal goods or articles,
(i)for the reception of goods to be washed, cleaned or repaired, where the sale, display or service is to visiting members of the public.
However it doesnt allow much flexibility on change - that would require a change of use planning permission to LBL..
We dont need another supermarket here!
How bout another Nisa? Two just isn't enough on the same street...
Do pubs get built anymore? Dosnt
Which side of Mantle Road is it?
The Maypole was a proper scary pub. Weirdly, it seemed to be segregated by race the time we went in. All very friendly until it wasn't. We left very (but not too) quickly.
It was a miniature Deep South in Brockley. Still, shame it was knocked down, all we have now is Spoons.
I live on the road behind the lot and illegal parking is a real nightmare. Every morning lots of people park wherever they can and then walk to the station so they save on the train tickets. With the new development is going to be even worse.
These are private roads so residents have the right to implement a CPZ and I'm seriously going to explore the option. Where do you start?
Here's an option: http://www.flashpark.co.uk/
I do love the fact that people moving to live virtually on top of a railway station are worried about car parking. What do people think the railway is for?
You think cars and trains are used for the same thing?
Oh, it's Patrick... long term member of the MBE...
The Maypole is a sad loss, it was a real old-fashioned pub.
