Brockley Central readers invited to preview night at the new-look Talbot

Felix, the new landlord at The Talbot, has been true to his word and delivered another progress update on the rennovation of The Talbot pub.

We mentioned to him that we organise the occasional drinks night for BC readers and that it would be good to organise one there once the pub's open. He's gone one better and offered to stage the Brockley Central drinks night before the pub's formally open - giving us the chance to try the pub out before its formal opening.

It's a fantastic offer and one which we'll be bringing you more news of soon, but for now, here's his update:

As you can imagine things are heating up towards the opening date. I am sure that no-one will be surprised that we are a little delayed. We were originally aiming to be open next week, but it now looks like we will be three weeks late. I will confirm an actual opening date next week but for the time being I would leave your diaries free for the back end of week commencing the 23rd November.

I would like to extend an invitation to all Brockley Central readers to an exclusive preview opening just for locals. I am sure that you will all be keen to have a look before everyone else comes and hope that you will forgive any teething problems on our first night of trading as the re-incarnated Talbot.

The project has not been without its difficulties; In September we had a break-in where all of the copper piping and cabling was ripped out and taken for scrap. This wouldn’t have been too much of a problem had the stuff not already been installed and laid. We came back to work on a Monday morning with a cellar full of water and more than a week of work lost. A couple of young lads tried to get in last weekend but soon realized that the new alarm system was armed and that 4 external CCTV cameras were keeping a beady eye on them. Smile! You’re on candid camera.

On a more positive note, we have managed to employ some friendly local people to come and help run the place and we are all very excited about meeting you all when you come in for the first time. We really hope that you will all like the place and enjoy it regularly as a local pub should be.

I’ll let everyone know the date for the preview night as soon as I know.

From the Barge, through the Orchard, up to the Wickham and the Talbot... Brockley almost has a 'beer mile' :-D

will definitely b there.

Great news - will definitely be a regular, especially on those nights that I get a St Johns train home from work.

If only someone would take over the barge.

So that's what Oracle was referring to a few weeks ago when s/he said that something had been nicked. Typical sour feast lahnan...

The Oracle said...

Coming soon, to Brockley
Panfried pommes de terre
- and chickadee
Two of each, with a side order
£2.50 medium, £3.00 large

...can you tell what it is yet?

Headhunter said...

Come on, is the Barge really that bad? I think that Wetherspoon's places have a place and I'd sooner have it a Wetherspoons place than a boarded up derelict building, or worse, demolished and turned into yet another garage/MOT/car sales place or a block of flats...

So is Hugh buying a round of twentyfive year old whisky for everyone? I hate whisky but would be good to prise open his wallet.

Anonymous said...

How will he Know Brockley central readers from the ordinary punter ?

Headhunter said...

The ordinary punter doesn't read Brockley Central so they won't know about it. If they do read this article then they are a Brockley Central reader so are allowed in... Simple.

Anonymous said...

Yes Anon 12.33 bar wars

Or as Harry Hill would say Fight

Anonymous said...

Mmmm Simple, just tell all your mates, and If they ask, just say you read Brockley central

tyrwhitt ali said...

Ohhh I'm very excited about this!

Brockley Nick said...

@Anon - in which case they'd be friends of a BC reader, which is fine. No-one's going to be asking people to show a BC membership card, it's just like any other BC drinks night - all welcome - but in a sparkly new pub, so we can christen the beer taps.

Headhunter said...

It's a pub on a suburban street in Brockley, I shouldn't think that even if mates of mates turn up it's going to descend into a drugs and sex super-orgy. We're all unassuming, middle class, organic vegetable eating denizens here...

Anonymous said...

Oh Shame.

Anonymous said...

Did someone say super-orgy? Will try and make drinks late November. Barge will be a pizaa express in 3 years.

Anonymous said...

The barge is great space, that atmosphere is fine but it's the quality of the food, that I can't stomach. Though the drinks are well priced.

Headhunter said...

Well, what do you expect for 4.99 (or whatever it is) for a curry and a pint of Fosters? Cordon Bleu? Strictly micro waveable pre packed fare I should think.

On the subject has anyone ever looked up Brockley on You Tube? There was one entry on there from one of the Polish bar staff at the Barge. He seems a nice chap, he walks round for about 15 mins with sticking the camera in the face of staff, customers and serving food and drinks, the place is completely dead at the time - about 3 customers and the barman seems to know them all better than their own mothers. You even get a glimpse of the kitchen... Thrilling stuff...

I just watched that HH,Clock says 10 to 10 and already on the sauce.

Matt-Z said...

Headhunter is that you in the video slumped near the fruit machines?

Headhunter said...

Yeah, well spotted...

Anonymous said...

@Headhunter It's not about price it's about quality, I had a hot chocolate there once, nice presentation, but it had about 10 teaspoons of sugar in it. I have had better hot chocolate from the vending machines at work for 20p.

Although It has CCTV,Its pitch black at night,Could do with some light to distract chancers

Anonymous said...

I cant believe no one heard pipes etc being ripped out,Its not exactly a Quite job,and couldn't of been done In the dark without light, therefore torches used.

@Anon 17.08

Please could you resubmit in English?

One good thing about Wetherspoons is that they have a no musak policy. I'm sorry, but if I go to a pub I actually want to be able to talk to the people I'm with.

Glad that film is still on U-tube - it was mentioned here when first posted and has a really dreamy quality.

Headhunter said...

I thought that. It's very dull in reality yet something, I really don't know what, makes you watch it to the end....

Tyrwhitt Michael said...

The Talbot refugees, namely the dozen or so "old blokes" as Nick refers to them, who used to inhabit the Old Talbot, will be out in force.

Hope to see you all there

Richard Elliot said...

Wooo hooo! It's opening just in time for my (brief) return to the BC fold.

Richard said...

Very excited - this will be my new local and in time for Christmas too. I've always meant to make a BC drinks, if I make this one I can not-so-sneakily check on the new competition. This and The Orchard hopefully mean great strides for the station end of Brockley, especially with Browns already having added so much

Hugh said...

The exterior paintwork is looking good.

Any news on the supposed conversion of the corner house to a solicitor's office and flat above, or even when the detached junkyard next door to the Talbot will be inadvertently torched by the squatters during a bongfest?

Headhunter said...

The "old blokes" AKA the "old soaks"...

Monkeyboy said...

A solicitors? The area is going downhill rapidly.

Anonymous said...

It was refurbished Talbot last time,Now Its new-look Talbot.

Oh If the Devil casts his net on that opening evening, what a haul he would get.

westsider said...

Anon 12.17: What?

Tyrwhitt Michael said...

If you think we're "old soaks" feel free to challenge our intellectual might any Tuesday in the Wickham Quiz.

We rarely finish below third.

Headhunter said...

Just joking. So yuo're the team that comes 3rd at the Wickham? I rarely fall below 2nd (not really).

Erin Brock said...

Anon 12:17, is that from scripture? I dont recognise it.

Tyrwhitt Michael said...

Not always third sometimes we come second and quite often we win. (Hooray!!)

Don't know what we will do if they have a quiz at the Talbot?!?

Erin Brock said...

Is it the shade of an abstemious victorian bringing his dread prognostication. Speak Anon 12:17

Erin Brock said...

T.M. If they have a Quiz at the Talbot, I'd imagine we'll win it.

Monkeyboy said...

A BC quiz team? I know just enough to be dangerous about most things, not enough to be useful though.

Headhunter said...

I enjoy the odd pub quiz, I just need a sport and TV/film/entertainment buff with me as I know nothing/have no interest in any of those things

Anonymous said...

Oh god, another sport hater.

drakefell debaser said...

cycling is/ can be a sport HH so you must have some interest.

drakefell debaser said...

And on that subject, are any of these new drinking holes going to have a screen somewhere for sky sports?

Headhunter said...

What I mean is I enjoy doing sport - I love running, cycling, I used to do fencing even, but I have absolutely zero interest in sports trivia - you know, who won the FA cup in blah di blah? Who managed the Arsenal team when blah di blah di blah.... Yaaaawn... I can barely be bothered to watch the Tour de France telly and I love cycling, I just have no interest in watching other people do sport on TV and learning mindless facts about it I'm more hands on.

Same goes for film and TV. I love the cinema but I have no interest in learning which actor played so and so in the 1977 remake of such and such.... etc etc.

Headhunter said...

The Wickham has a huge Sky Sports banner oustide these days, so I guess you can watch sports there and on the subject, is the massive Sky banner compliant with conservation area guidelines? I think I may write to the council...

Hugh said...

Is anyone hoping to pull on opening night?

Anonymous said...

What about the big banner outside the college HH

Headhunter said...

I haven't seen it. I'll do a bike by on the way home. I could write include it in my letter to the council. Is it horrible?

drakefell debaser said...

HH, I see your point, trivia is not my bag either but sadly I can't kick a ball like Torres so I have to watch him do it.

Headhunter said...

I don't know what it is about sport and film trivia that sends me to sleep, I'm very interested in trivia for so many other subjects - architecture, early 20th century history, nutrition, human biomechanics and other obscure areas of science but sport and film facts leave me cold.

BTW I love that everyone has completely ignored Hugh's comment about pulling on opening night! Hugh I thought you were married or partnered or something? Does the other hald know you're planning on some serious flirting?

PUA said...

Hugh's a playa. Didn't you know?

Anonymous said...

He was also moving to Ealing and the Cator estate in Blackheath. Hugh is an internet created entity, some spotty teenage hacker has set up a virus so 'hugh' spouts smug slightly annoying comments automatically driven by the comments of others.

PUA said...

A Hughbot?

Tressillian James said...

A hughbot - terrifying - put him up for Mayor of London to replace the blondbot we've already got.

I am really really excited about the Talbot - a reasonably short stagger from my place - and the fact we get in first. Also strangely like the idea of a BCquiz team although never done a pub quiz before.

What do we think Felix will be wearing on opening night,Suit and Tie,Suit and Bow Tie or Casual ?

Anonymous said...

we will be thee whoop whoop!

Genius! getting stupidly over-excited about all this..
