Lewisham town centre re-development: Public meeting

The planned re-development of Lewisham town centre has become a hot talking point in recent months.

The scheme involves two linked developments, one on Loampit Vale and the other known as Lewisham Gateway. BC believes that both now have planning permission.

Residents opposing the developments, under the banner of Central Lewisham Action Group, have organised a public meeting on Thursday 12th November, at 7:30pm at the Tabernacle, Algernon Road, SE13 7AT.

Speakers announced so far include Lib Dem councillor for Lewisham Central Andrew Milton and Fran Rogers of Transition Brockley.

All those interested in the town centre's future are invited to attend and participate in the debate.

Thanks to BC regular and aspiring local politician Max Calo for originally blogging this info.

Am I the only idiot who was confused by this 'No Lewisham Towers' site - http://www.nolewishamtowers.org/? I thought, oh another public meeting, this time on 19 November, in ... where's the Summer Hill Community Centre?

See how long it takes you to work it out...

...on a related note, anyone know when we might actually something happen to physically progress these two projects? is there a deadline by which some work needs to happen before planning consent runs out?

Twinning!!

Planning consent lasts for 5 years, and Lewisham Gateway was approved in April 2006, not much left before it runs out.
Loampit Vale's just been approved.

Will It be OK to work on them together,Or Chaos.

They need do little more than put a spade in the ground within the five year window in order to honour the terms of planning permission, sadly.

Thurston Road is the third big application in the town centre, which also has planning permission. I think that one went through before Lewisham Gateway, so could be running out of time . . .

It was resubmitted and granted in 2007:

This is perhaps a little off topic but I was hoping that the word could be spread that resurfacing works are being done on the road at the top of Upper Brockley Road. This is good news, the less good news is that the contractor is just lifting and moving any cars in the way. I happen to be at home today with a terrible cold and was therefore able to move mine but just wanted to let people know that if they come home tonight and find that their car is no longer there, it has not been stolen. It could anywhere within a 2-3 street radius. Thanks. JamesUBR

Re Loampit Vale which is the new pool and residential flats.

In answer to a question at council the Deputy Mayor said it was her understanding the moment planning was granted the developers had 3 years in which to build the pool or face financial penalties.

Lewisham Gateway has a claimed timescale of 6 years from start of build, which originally was due to end in 2012.

Now the earliest it could be complete is 2016?

Those terms of the agreement between Barratt and Lewisham were agreed by the Mayor on 19/11/2008:

It mentions that an extra year was added to help Barratt solve its cashflow problem.

I guess the developers of Lewisham Gateway are pleased they didn't start the project in 2006 and have to find flat buyers and commercial interest in this market?
