Costa Smerelda, Nunhead

Costa Smerelda is a new pizza restaurant and bar on Nunhead Lane, run by established local entrepreneur Dick Daly.

Telegraph Hill networker Sara has tipped us off to the fact that the place is expanding, with the opening of the back room on March 27th.

To mark the occasion, the restaurant will be hosting a a night of music from Little Devils - entrance is free and the music starts around 9pm.

Suddenly a lot of Nunhead stuff here. I think Nick has decided to Annex Nunhead on behalf of Brockley....

Headhunter said...

I mean "Annexe"... That's the correct spelling, isn't it?

Nunhead is closer to some of us living in Brockley than certain parts of Brockley!
I can vouch for their pizzas, really good.

Tamsin said...

It's called an anschluss.

To kill this thread very early by whatever that criteria is that I can only vaguely remember.

Lots of decent places in Nunhead, it's worth a butchers at the fishmongers, so to speak. Also for those living near Brockley station, nunhead overground is only a ten minute walk away for trains to victoria.

"anschluss"? Excellent, that means we can get straight to accusing someone of being a Nazi. Cuts out all the waffle, it's the new lean mean blogging experience. Essential in these times of austerity, we all have a part to play.

So the pizzas, any good? if so it's esentially Brockley, if their average it's obviously Nunhead.

Thanks, MB, that was it. The temptation was irresistible! And what is the other one that is meant to mark the point where a discussion can go no further?

And trains to Blackfriars, Farringdon and Thameslink too, aren't they? And Bromley South in the other direction, where you can change for a day out in Margate. A gem of a station and nice views from the platforms while you wait.

Godwin's Law is the one that says any Internet discussion will end with someone being compared to the Nazis and at that point all discussion becomes superfluous.

Do they deliver pizza?

Brockley Nick said...

To the people of Brockley Central's credit, the nazis don't get much of a look in on this site - is there a Brockley equivalent of Godwin's Law? First one to use the words "organic" or "fairtrade" as a form of abuse loses?

Headhunter said...

You bunch of bloody organic, faitrade nazis... Oh damn....

GOOD PIZZA, BACKED HARD.

Tamsin said...

The pizzas in Costa Smerelda are apparently home-made and baked in a decent pizza oven - is that fairtrade and oranic enough, while remaining on topic? (Also endorsed by Mussolini.)

Well there's also new Dominos Pizza opening in New Cross Gate. It's just a shame they have decided to move into a lovely old former pub.

Pizzas are good, and they do deliver. Not sure how much they'd like being described as Brockley though, the partners in the business also run Il Mirto restaurant in East Dulwich and I think they see Nunhead as East East Dulwich.

yes they do deliver.

Where's the Dominos going to be at New Cross Gate?

The pizzas are well worth a chomp, and cheaper than a lot of other very average pizza take aways in the area. Being a student, its well priced and tasty, a rarity. spot on.

We have had pizzas from these guys a couple of times and they are good - proper italian bases which I prefer to the Dominos sort. It seems a little haphazard and busy there but they do deliver and you can also get anything else of the menu delivered too, so if you want pasta or greek salad - no problem. A nice change from endless chicken dippers as side choices. The pizzas are also pretty big :-)

If you haven't had a menu through the door, google Il Mirto in East Dulwich (the first version of this restaurant), they have a website and the menu is the same. Happy nomming

The NXG Dominos will be within the former Hatcham Arms pub on New Cross Road, opposite All Saints Church.

The only good thing about the Dominos is that the shambolic glass block "renovation" is being un-done.

Well, I had the pizza from this place and it is very nice and very good value. Its not like the real thing in Italy but nevertheless very tasty.
Was fun listening to the waitresses and the pizza maker (Marco?) talk in Italian reminded me when I was living in Italy. Definitely better then Dominoes.

Tried this place the other night - not impressed at all. Le Querce prices, but definitely not Le Querce quality. Everything was undercooked, from the grilled veg (nasty, rubbery aubergine), to the calamari (soggy battered rounds), to the pizza (sloppy flacidity with cheap meat toppings). The waitress was pushy, and the cheapest wine is £18. Very disappointing.

This place is hopeless. The food is ok, but the delivery and service is appalling. They have no idea where they're going, they bring the wrong food, and then give you attitude as if it's your fault. Avoid. (PS - if anyone's looking for some antipasti and a couple of pizzas, they're in the Mantle Road area.)

Ramble said...

Agreed. Had pizza delivered last weekend! Very very disappointing.

KennyTinsel - I don't understand the Mantle Road comment? Is there a good place for pizza there?

i go here at least once a week. it's 100% legit.

i pick up and haven't ever had it delivered but i've always had wicked pizza. i don't eat off the 'non pizza menu' because it's a really quiet restaurant so i imagine the food and produce isn't going to be of exceptional quality.

the pizza however is fantastic, such a wonderful change from DEEEEEEP PAN pizza hut, dominos nonsense everywhere else. i recommend this is almost everyone to the point that i keep a massive stack of their menus under the counter

The pizzas are good, had some delivered last week, 30 minute wait and the bruschetta was good too.

Much improved over a few months ago when I had a home deilvery and the pizzas were so so.

Costa Smerelda is fantatstic. Have had pizzas delivered from there about 4 times now, and have never once been disappointed. Price is fantatsic, as is the nice Italian man that delivers them. Cant fault it.

Sounds good, it's goiong to have to produce some really awesome Pizza if it wants to take the place of the Prezzo restaurants which in my opinion do the best Pizza ever.

KennyTinsel said...

Increasingly frustrated by La Costa Smerelda's continual failure to either (a) write down an address, or (b) find an address (fairly critical failings for anyone offering a delivery service) I decided to phone in the order and go and collect my pizzas the other night.

It turns out that the Nunhead restaurant is closed (and has been since January, according to the notices in the window). They're now operating from Il Mirto (or something) on Melbourne Terrace, the other side of Lordship Lane. Of course, when I eventually got there, they'd got the order wrong...

It's a shame, because their pizzas are good, but the service is hopeless. Now they're on the other side of East Dulwich, there MUST be someone nearer to SE4 cooking decent pizza... does anyone have any suggestions?

The Newcross House will be doing takeout pizzas and they have a proper oven so could be interesting. Doubt they'll be delivering though
