One Tree Hill, Honor Oak

One Tree Hill is a beautiful scrap of woodland a stone's throw from Honor Oak Station. Inspired by the account on the Original Sonic Truth blog, we walked around it this morning for the first time.

On a sunny morning, the kids loved walking between brilliantly lit clearings and through a maze of dark pathways that cover the two-acre nature reserve. We were there for an hour and didn't see another human being there for the entire time.

One Tree Hill also represents yet another amazing local vantage point to look out over London. The hill that still features an octagonal Anti-Zeppelin gun emplacement beautifully frames views of the London Eye, Strata and the Shard.

Indeed a nice place, and in May they have Dawn Chorus Walks which, if the weather is kind are wonderful. Regrettably last time the ash-cloud from the volcano did not persist quite long enough and the aeroplane noise was very noticable after the previous days of quiet, but still worth doing.

At the same post-card fair where I acquired the "Greetings from Brockley" card I also got one of St. Augustine's Church. The missive, this time in English, reads "Thank you very much for your card. Do you remember this Church? The hill surrounding it has now opened to the public. It is very unpleasant. No more peaceful afternoons for us now. Sincerely yours, Margaret Charlwood" So, Nick, you would not have been welcome on your family walk!

Auckland in NZ also has a famous one tree hill until some nutter Maori activist took a chainsaw to the one tree on the hill.

U2 wrote a stonkingly good song about it in honour of their late former kiwi manager. It was only released in the NZ version of the Joshua tree.

Slightly off topic I know

Was almost going to mention The Hill formerly known as One Tree.

I believe they pronounce it "One Tree Hull"

Oh we've got a comedian on our hands! Surprised you didn't get the sheep angle into your gag. Or is that something to look forward to in the encore?

Strata? Is that the 'biro' in Elephant and Castle?

Strata has also been nicknamed the electric razor for obvious reasons.
