Clarkey's, Mantle Road

Clarkey's is the new sandwich shop that's opened on Mantle Road. Right next to the western entrance to the station, it will obviously cater for the commuter crowd, as well as the relatively small number of people who work in the area.

We popped in to say hello this morning, but had a train to catch, so very quick first impressions were that the place and the people running it are both jolly, even if it's currently a little sparse as they get set up.

A new sandwich shop? This is the biggest news since Tickle-Me Bagels opened. Do they have a door that swings manically inwards almost hitting you in the face like Costcutter?

Eat, Drink AND love?

I shall be popping in for a crusty batton if time permits.

Good luck from the BDS.

Good luck Clarkey's!

Let's hope, like on;y a minority of our local businesses, that they exceed expectations rather than disappoint. Good luck!

Looks good. On another but not unrelated note - does anyone else worry how narrow Mantle road is going to be when the pavement widening is complete? The works at the moment will be great for pedestrians but I can envisage cars hitting each other.

wow - I love this site but sometimes I wonder...
In one thread about a new sandwich shop we've had anthropomorphism of a door (it moves in and out! arggghhh it's coming to get me!); a worry that Mantle Rd may be made too narrow for cars to go down (I know LBL aren't always on top of their game but I doubt even they would do that); general meh-ness from Ed CPZ.
Amazing

Obviously cars will be able to go down the road but it will be very narrow, and therefore it may cause accidents. I was simply voicing my concerns.

I am aware that no-one else shares my concerns about the angry door at Costcutters. I'm convinced it's after me but if no-one else has suffered at the hands of this mean-spirited exit I would be surprised. One day i will turn around from the checkout, satified with my purchase of cheap cornichons, overpriced biltong or a rare loaf of Seeded Batch, and the thing will get me in the forehead. Ouch.

@wow If you think doors don't have personalities then you're off your knocker.

When is a door not a door? When it's a murderous psychopath.

Of course doors have personalities - think of the ones on the Heart of Gold - closing with the smug satisfaction of a job well done. And in contrast some of the old fashioned lift gates (as going up to the Lewisham Volunteer Centre) are down-right cantakerous.

@Nylon Cube - that door is trouble!
@wow - I understand that the word 'meh' is used to express indifference and disinterest but would you be so kind as to confirm as the OED have not yet deemed it worthy of an entry?

Best wishes although I doubt I will cross their door.

Just wanted to get a Blog Cricket Hat-Trick

Oh dear
Cardinal sin of Metaphor mixing
Should be either

Cross their threshold

or

Darken their door

That should of course be "there" for Catman ;-)

Probably best to leave it there TM.

So, anyway, the new sandwich shop is good news!

Shame for me that its the other side of the tracks, but good for people on that side to grab a mocha-chino on the way to work in the mornings. Hope it does well but I fear the location may not work in its favour.... hope i am proven wrong. Does the Broca food shop on the 'West side' still have a cafe section to it and if so anyone ever use it?

Like most new ventures in Brockley,it will be used for a while.

anyone tried this yet?

I went here yesterday and had a very nice baguette. I sat in there while I had it and it's a surprising nice place to watch the world go by. (And more when by than I would have anticipated.)
