A photographer's view of Brockley

Brockley Jon spotted this clever widget which maps an area based on the geotags assigned to photographs by users of Flickr. In other words, when someone takes uploads a photograph and labels it "Brockley" it maps it. The result is this map, which shows some photographers think St John's stretches to Hilly Fields.

What's really interesting though is that the names Ladywell and Crofton Park don't seem to register with Flickr users at all.

Maybe Crofton Park and Ladywell dont have many photographers or people don't identify with these areas...

Crofton Park is where the original Brockley was though.

Great find.
That sets the Ravensbourne Pub in Lewisham and also Hither Green.

crofton park and ladywell don't have their own postcodes

I'd have thought it's just because there is nothing to photograph in crofton or ladywell. The other areas all have parks and stuff.

Bits of Hilly Fields are definitely in Ladywell.

I wonder if they had a conversation like this when they partitioned India?

More recently than that when they were splitting up Yugoslavia - but then at least they had a 3-d computer model of the terrain to work on. They were literally drawing lines over the mountain-sides. The problem - if I recall it correctly from the documentary - was that someone forgot to call one of the delegations to this all-night meeting and the whole process then had to go back to square one.

There's a joke about Moses that if Moses had turned left instead of right the Israelites would have got the oil and the Arabs wouldnhave been stuck with the oranges. But we digress.

Surprising to see how many local amateur photographers are penetrating our area!

When you geotag a photo in Flickr by inputting the postcode or dragging and dropping to the map, it doesn't always get it right (it might say it's in Lewisham when you want it to say Brockley); but there is a dropdown menu which lets you more accurately tag it. My guess is most people just drop to the map and don't worry about the details, hence the slightly odd boundaries.

Nice idea, but if you try Greenwich or Bexley you get some seriously dodgy results!

Searching fir Ladywell or Crofton Park directly on flickr brings up lots of very nice photographs. Maybe the application needs a few tweaks - but interesting none the less.

Google Maps thinks Hilly Fields is Honor Oak Park, which doesn't really help matters.

Took some pics of Hilly Fields last week which I fully intend to tag 'Ladywell' just to even things up.
