Royal Wedding / Big Lunch Street Parties

The Royal Wedding takes place on April 29th, Big Lunch day is June 5th.

If you're planning a street party for either of these ancient rites then you can apply to Lewisham Council for a closure of your street by completing the form here. StreetParty.org.uk also offers useful free advice.

The Council claims that 57 Big Lunch parties were held in Lewisham last year.

The deadline for the Royal Wedding is March 29th, while the Big Lunch deadline is May 5th.

Please use this thread to help organise or promote any street parties you're planning in Brockley. Whatever 'in Brockley' means.

Transition Brockley are having a 'Royal Weeding' day event on the community garden at the station (hats off to BXAG's Rupert who came up with that title!).

Having a street party is fine. But to 'celebrate' the monarchy? Yuck.

I plan to go around spoiling them all on account of the fact that the monarchy is an outdated institution that we'd be better off without.

In any case, these 'patriotic' street parties are too often held by people who fly the Union flag upside down. Which says it all.

Viva la revolution. Long live President Beckham.

I'm not sure who will be more affronted that we are in agreement - me or Lou?!

I'm willing to sell out for the free cake and bank holiday.

Can someone who has organised a Big Lunch tell us how much work was involved? I looked at all the forms last year, and was a bit put off by the need to get 100% agreement from neighbours and the need to take legal responsibility for everyone's welfare...! Added to the organisational burden it seemed a bit much, but I'd really like to be persuaded otherwise, having seen some of the great photos from last year.

Am liking the sound of the Royal Weeding bash. Will this also be a bit of a street party or is it simply weeding? Or do we weed first and then get a reward?

Frankly, despite the anti-monarchist principles, I too will sell out for cake, and a bit of community spirit. This the reason I live in Brockley in any case (both the cake and the community).

the getting everyone's permission is probably the most labour intensive, but it also means that afterwards you will know everyone in your street. The legal thing is easy, you get insurance for about £50 - I'm sure between you all you can cover it. a bit of early organisation is key - i say all this, it was my wife that did it all last year!

GO ON ... DO IT!!!

Thanks Lawrence - it's already a very friendly sociable street so hopefully we can share the burden!
